Trans and LGBTQ Children’s Books at the College Library

A new collection has been added to the Lois Jefferson Long Library

On Friday, the 6th of April,  students, staff, faculty, and members of the local community came together to celebrate the unveiling of a LGBTQ+ children’s book collection at the Louis Jefferson Long Library.

River Vooris, Assistant Professor of Women’s, Transgender, and Queer Studies, Vic Munos, Professor Emiratis, Tiffany Raymond, Director or Library Services, and Susan Henking, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, presented the new mobile children’s library in the Learning Commons.

The project started when Dr. Munoz asked their students to review a book that focused on trans lives. Students quickly noticed how few options were available. Since then, Tiffany Raymond has been working with Dr. Vooris to curate a new collection and rectify issues within standard library classification practices. Dr. Vooris shared the importance of continuing to diversify children’s literature, saying that “the books reflect what children have been telling us.”

This event followed the addition of a Trans Pride flag in Sommer Center for Trans Day of Remembrance. The flag will remain a permanent addition.

The Louis Jefferson Long Library is open to the local community seven days a week. Parties interested in scheduling a special visit should contact Tiffany Raymond at traymond@wells.edu.
