TRIO Student Support Services

Eligible students are welcomed into an inclusive environment that supports their personal and academic success — at no additional cost to them.

Our Mission

The mission of TRIO Student Support Services is to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. Our office also provides students with the necessary tools to adjust to the demands of a college environment, while helping them develop good study habits and decision-making skills that increase retention and graduation rates for college students.

Our directives are to provide segmented populations with the added support mechanisms needed to meet the challenges of higher education. Through the development of academic and personal skills, the program focuses on deepening critical-thinking competencies; increasing student retention and promoting degree completion; and matriculating into graduate school and/or the workforce.

Who We Serve

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federal TRIO program sponsored and funded by the U.S. Department of Education designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible students. We provide free services to help students persist and graduate from Wells College.

Our office serves first-generation students, students from low-income backgrounds and students with a documented disability as they work toward earning their college degree. If you are one such student, we invite you to join our program and get started on enhancing your academic experience at Wells College.

Program Overview

Current Wells College students accepted into the TRIO-SSS program will gain access to an academic coordinator who will help you chart your academic and professional goals, assistance with securing services (tutors), and overcome obstacles and face challenges head-on. And as an added benefit, these services are provided free of charge to enrolled participants!

Along with support and encouragement, our program also provides the following resources free to participants, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and support from Wells College:

  • advocacy, mentoring, coaching, and support
  • basic skills instruction with select courses
  • study skills workshops and other academic support
  • financial aid advocacy and financial literacy training
  • Preparation for applying to graduate school, including help with researching your options, obtaining recommendation letters, writing your personal statement, and loaning you text prep materials (for tests such as the GRE, GMAT, and so forth)
  • limited financial assistance for Federal Pell Grant-eligible students with documented financial need

TRIO-SSS students at Wells College have access to a variety of academic, personal, and cultural resources that help them grow as students and individuals. Click the sections below to read more and see if you qualify!
