The Wells College Book Arts Center presents the 42nd Susan Garretson Swartzburg ’60 Memorial Lecturer Harold Kyle. Titled “Type High Tech,” this talk will take place Wednesday, October 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the Stratton Lecture Hall (209) at Wells College.

Harold Kyle, a pivotal figure in the contemporary letterpress world, is the founder of Boxcar Press in Syracuse, N.Y., and one of the organizers of the educational website Letterpress Commons. Boxcar Press has made it’s mission to embrace technology to help keep letterpress printing commercially viable. By pursuing a contemporary method of production that serves not only industry but artists alike, the impact of Boxcar’s success has been invaluable and far-reaching—literally transforming the contemporary field of letterpress printing as we know it. Harold will discuss the challenges and success encountered in pursuing this mission.

Harold was trained in the book arts at Carleton College and at Campbell-Logan Bindery, one of the most respected hand-binderies in the nation. While serving his time as the youngest printer-in-residence at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA), he received a coveted Fine Press Minnesota Book Award for his platemaking and printing of MCBA’s winter book “The Summer House.”

The talk is free and open to the public.

The Susan Garretson Swartzburg 60’ Memorial Book Arts Lecture is a series named for Susan Garretson Swartzburg. Working closely with Wells faculty and staff, Swartzburg helped to organize the press, bindery and other components that became Wells Book Arts Center. She served on the Book Arts Board and established a biannual book arts lecture series in memory of her father, developing contacts, raising funds, organizing events and finding speakers.
