Students learn the principles of design as well as how to apply their ideas to projects including posters, books, videography, and even games.
This program is available as a minor.
In our technology-oriented society, the field of visual communication is growing in popularity and importance as a profession—or just as an additional skill for those going into business, public relations, marketing, or any field that can benefit from a good visual sensibility.
Visual communication has a long history, from early printing work, through the development of mass media in the 20th Century, up to the most current mobile apps and digital strategies. A student needs to have a basic familiarity with both the past and the present in order to create innovative work.
The minor will provide a familiarity with the tools, technologies, and "rules" of professional design and a basis for developing your skills and talents. In combination with a major such as business, psychology, film and media studies, or theatre and dance, you can develop a specific framework to benefit your career. You'll learn to design for the Internet, video, print and various multimedia outlets as you prepare for a career working in design studios, advertising agencies, corporate and institutional design offices, and freelance opportunities.
Hands-on lessons with letterpress printing, digital design, drawing, and photography will help you determine what you do well or need to spend more time on. At the same time, you can gain an understanding of theory, history, and professional practice so that you're prepared for life after graduation.
Outside the classroom, students in the program can pick up additional experience while learning about the professional world through creative internships, opportunities to serve as a teacher's assistant, or through work-study roles with college offices and departments. Learn from those who are already holding careers related to design, and work in a professional context with designers and clients to plan, execute or manage design jobs.
