Mariam Raquib ’97, is founder and director of Afghanistan Samsortya. Samsortya is a Pashtu word meaning "revitalization of the environment." Over forty years of conflict, traditional farms and vast forests have been destroyed in Afghanistan. This environmental devastation has left women and children especially to suffer from severe malnutrition. Samsortya established nurseries that annually propagate and disperse thousands of trees, and employs local women who coordinate family gardens, raise livestock and poultry, cultivate fruit trees and manage ongoing nursery operations. By helping local communities re-establish food sovereignty, Samsortya empowers those in need to determine their own futures.
