Below is an update that Marie Chapman Carroll ’75, the chair of the College’s Board of Trustees, sent to the Wells College community this morning. A video announcement can be found at the end of this article.
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
The Wells College Board of Trustees met this week to review and discuss all options for the future of Wells. Guided by the College’s mission to think critically, reason wisely and act humanely, the Board voted yesterday to approve the College's operating budget and to move forward in planning for the 2020-2021 academic year. As of today, Wells is on track to open this fall with students residing on campus.
Your inspired generosity, along with better than anticipated enrollment and a bridge loan, gave us the confidence to go forward as we continue to drive towards our $7.5 million financial goal. Thanks to the efforts of more than 1,500 alumnae and alumni; President Gibralter and his team; our dedicated faculty and staff; the Bell Tower Committee; and friends of the College who care deeply about our responsibility to our students and about preserving the Wells legacy for the future, we have the opportunity today to move forward.
We on the board have been moved by the outpouring of support that we have received from the extended Wells community in recent months. Your messages and your encouragement have kept us going. I am grateful to the staff and faculty at Wells who have been working tirelessly in the service of the College and its students. It is a testament to the effort and tenacity of President Gibralter and his Cabinet team that we have a plan for a reopening that will allow the College to operate while also protecting the health and safety of all on campus.
We are not out of the woods with COVID-19 and a long journey still lies ahead for Wells. The coronavirus continues to provide unexpected challenges beyond our control that may alter our path forward—we will continue to tackle those together.
Our intensified fundraising efforts must also continue in earnest for the foreseeable future, although your unprecedented generosity has given us options and flexibility in finding this new path forward. We also will continue to work proactively with our accrediting body, which seeks to ensure that we have the financial and human resources to fulfill our educational mission.
Moving forward, we will make strategic changes that will help Wells better compete in the higher education marketplace and will share these ideas with you soon.
We will send a follow-up communication by the end of this week with many more details about our reopening plan, including a summary of important changes to our procedures, and planned academic schedule.
There are many challenges ahead. I am thankful to continue this journey knowing that we will face them together. Please continue to communicate with us anytime via email at Wellsemail@example.com with your questions and concerns.
