Wells College is preparing for our 148th Commencement exercises, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, on the steps in front of Macmillan Hall. The members of the Wells College class of 2016 will receive their diplomas prepared to bring their scholarship, intellect and liberal arts foundation to careers and advanced degree programs in the sciences, arts, the business world, and more.

Many of these students have already made plans for their next steps in life and are looking towards graduate studies at the University of Rochester, Syracuse University College of Law, The New School, the University of Maine, State University at Stony Brook, Northeastern, Lehigh University, American University’s Washington College of Law and more. Others have secured positions with Willis Dady Prevention & Shelter (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), the Nature Conservancy as a restoration crew and member (Pulaski, N.Y.), Rent-A-Car Enterprise as a management trainee, achieving a Museum Studies Certificate (Harvard University Extension School), and as a lobbying assistant in Sacramento, Calif.

The students of this class have already proven they’re capable of remarkable achievements. Just in the past year, members of the senior class have shared their research in fields ranging from molecular biology to English to anthropology at the 30th National Conference for Undergraduate Research; organized Wells’ second annual Body Monologues that featured student-written and performed pieces on eating disorders, domestic violence, sexual assault, body positivity and more; created and coordinated their senior thesis art exhibitions; and attended the American College Dance Association Conference at Brockport University,  just to name a few.

Michelle Lee ’16 will serve as the student speaker for Commencement. Lee is earning her degree in English (with a concentration in creative writing) and in Women’s and Gender Studies. She is an involved and steadfast student leader, serving as chair of the Women’s Resource Center, chief copy editor for The Sycamore, and more. Wells added the student speaker to the Commencement exercises in 2014.

The Class of 2016 will hear a Commencement address from their very own President Gibralter. A nationally-recognized leader in higher education, President Gibralter is known for his commitment to students, to environmental sustainability and for strengthening the institutions he has led. Commencement will also include Board of Trustees Chair Carrie Bolton ’92 presiding over the ceremonies, the Rev. Barbara Blom ’82 providing the invocation, and Henry’s VIII performing the national anthem and the Alma Mater.

In the event of inclement weather, proceedings will be held in the newly-renovated Frances Tarlton Farenthold Wing of the Schwartz Athletic Center. Additional information can be found at www.wells.edu/about/commencement.

Wells College promises a relevant liberal arts and sciences education. Intellectually challenging. Reinterpreted for today. Classroom teaching combined with hands-on learning. Wells graduates enter the world prepared for successful futures.
