ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team closed out their 2011 season with a 1-1 tie against Elmira College on Thursday evening in Elmira, N.Y. Senior Elisabeth Rollo (Geneva, N.Y.), playing in her final game, tallied the lone goal for the Express, while Lauren Kirkland scored for Elmira. With the tie the Express finish the season at 5-9-1, while Elmira moves to 2-12-1 on the year.
Elmira got on the board 25 minutes into the first period on goal by Kirkland off a double assist from Ashland Hall and Ashley Leja. The 1-0 lead held into the second period until Rollo slammed home a rebound off a shot from Shelby Moszcowickz (Rochester, N.Y.), knotting the game up at 1-1 and forcing overtime.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the OT period as the game would be called after ten minutes due to poor ground conditions. Amanda Catalano (Lockport, N.Y.) finished with 15 saves in net for the Express, while her counterpart Lauren Thomas finished with 10 saves.
The Express finish with one of their more successful seasons in recent history; the five wins marks the highest single season win total over the past four years, while goalie Amanda Catalano finishes the season ranked in the Top 50 in the country in goal against average at 1.63. The Express will graduate one senior and return 10 starters for a team that will look to build off of this season’s success.
