09-29-11 - Michael Borsz Named Director of Athletics
AURORA, N.Y. – Wells College has named Michael Borsz its next Director of Athletics. A Camillus native and Hobart College graduate, Borsz currently serves as the Assistant Athletic Director and Recruitment Coordinator at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
"We are excited to welcome Mike to Wells where he joins an outstanding athletics staff leading our growing and competitive program. Mike brings a deep commitment to Division III athletics and a broad experience in outstanding colleague colleges. I am delighted that Mike is joining us and we are excited to welcome Mike to Wells," said President Lisa Marsh Ryerson.
Borsz, who will begin his duties on Oct. 10, will directly oversee the College's 16 varsity programs and over 160 student-athletes.
"I am very honored and excited to be named the next Director of Athletics at Wells College," Borsz said. "I particularly would like to thank President Lisa Marsh Ryerson, Provost and Dean of the College Dr. Cindy Speaker and the rest of the search committee for this great opportunity."
Borsz has spent the past five years at Catholic University, first serving as an admissions counselor and assistant lacrosse coach, before being promoted to Assistant Athletic Director and Recruiting Coordinator in January of 2008. In his time at Catholic, Borsz served as the department liaison for several offices on campus, coordinated all recruiting for the department's 21 varsity programs, and assisted with the D.C. Special Olympics and the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse First Round Tournament. Borsz also continued to serve as an assistant lacrosse coach, helping lead the Cardinals to a program best 12-4 record in 2010.
Prior to Catholic, Borsz spent two years as the assistant men's lacrosse coach at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.
"We are thrilled that Mike Borsz is joining the Wells team. Not only is he an experienced athletic administrator and coach, he's experienced in college admissions and fund raising," Provost and Dean of the College Cindy Speaker said. "I believe that he has the skill set that will help take our programs to the next level. Mike's drive to foster a culture that is based on athletic and academic excellence and one that embraces the spirit of a balanced liberal arts education fits with the college's mission and the Division III student-athlete philosophy."
Although his official duties do not begin until Oct. 10, Borsz has already begun the process of acclimating himself to Wells. "I have reached out to the athletic department staff to listen and learn and begin to take stock of the current state and position of Wells athletics. During my first couple of months on campus I hope to sit down and meet with many different campus offices, faculty and staff members throughout the Wells community to see how we can best work together to educate and create a positive experience for our students and community."
Borsz received his graduate degree in education with a specialization in education administration, curriculum, foundations, leadership and policy studies from Catholic University and his undergraduate degree in sociology from Hobart where he participated as a member of the men's lacrosse team.
"I know I speak for the rest of our staff when I say we are extremely excited to have Michael Borsz join the Wells community as our next director of athletics. Wells athletics has experienced a tremendous amount of growth over the past five years and to have someone of his experience and leadership ability will be an asset to Wells as we continue to grow," said search committee member and Assistant Athletic Director Aaron Bouyea.
