WESTON, Mass. – The Wells College field hockey team fell 2-1 to Regis College on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Mass. Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) and Stacy Burn (Waltham, Mass.) each scored for the Pride, while Brittany Stanton (Deposit, N.Y.) tallied the lone goal for the Express. With the loss the Express fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Pride improves to 1-6.
The Pride scored early in the game when Walls finished a pass inside the box from Christine O’Toole (Ashburnham, Mass.) giving the Pride a 1-0 lead.
Despite the one goal deficit, the Express came out strong in the second half. Stanton broke through the Pride’s defense and sent a shot into the goal to even the score at 1-1.
After remaining even for much of the second half, a sequence of penalty corners within the last three minutes remaining gave the Pride the opening they needed. Burns scored off a penalty corner pass from Cheyenne Genga (South Winsor, Conn.) for the go ahead goal with less than three minutes to play.
With no time on the clock, the Express would have one more chance to tie the game on a penalty corner, however, Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) hit a shot wide as the Pride held on for the victory.
Amanda Catalano (Lockport, N.Y.) finished with two saves in the loss, while Pride goalie Genesiz Gudiel (Lawrence, Mass.) finished with three. Regis held the advantage in shots (20-8) and penalty corners (20-6).
The Express returns to action Sunday morning when they take on the Becker College Hawks at Leicester, Mass. and the Pride will return to match Tuesday in Nashua, N.H. to take on the Rivier College Raiders.
