Accomplishments

Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, presented three papers this academic year on issues of culture, land, and energy extraction. Professor Olson gave the paper “Current Changes: The Flow of Water, Oil, and Money along the Upper Missouri River” for the session “Technology, Energy, and Dispossession: The Greening of Capitalism and Sustainability” at the American Anthropology Association Annual Meeting, held Nov. 18-24, 2013, Chicago, Illinois.

In March, Professor Ernie Olson presented the paper “Oil, Water, and the Green Garden” for the session “Traditional and Alternative Health Care” at the Society of Applied Anthropology Annual Meeting held at Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 18-22.

In April, Ernie Olson presented the paper “Big Ag and the Little Garden: The Loss of the Garden and Gardening Culture in the Golden Triangle of Eastern Montana” for the session titled “Environment/Landscape/Food” at the Northeastern Anthropological Association Annual Meeting, held at SUNY-Potsdam, Potsdam, N.Y., April 10-12, 2014.

Along with a number of Wells College faculty and students, Ernie Olson provided a photography exhibit for the performance installation “Unintended Consequences” …..The Best Laid Plans” held in Barler Hall, Wells College on April 23, 2014.

Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, shared co-organizer responsibilities with Lauren Eastwood, Associate Professor of Sociology at SUNY-Plattsburg, for the session “The Legacy of Resource Extraction: Public Concerns, Corporate Expansion, and Shifting Politics.” The session was organized for the American Anthropological Association Annual Conference held in Montreal, Canada during December of 2011.<br>Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, presented the paper “Big Sky Country, Hydrofracking, and Grassroots Efforts to Control Big Oil” as part of the session “The Legacy of Resource Extraction: Public Concerns, Corporate Expansion, and Shifting Politics” held at the American Anthropological Association Annual Conference, Montreal, Canada, Dec 17-21, 2011.<br>Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, contributed a photographic installation “Ethnographic Wide Angle” for the February 3, 2012 performance installation “Wide Angle” produced by Associate Professor of Theatre Siouxsie Easter.

Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, presented the paper “Country Roads, Community Connections: The Roadway as an Ethnographic Site for Viewing the Energy Drama” in the session “Community Anthropology” at the 52nd Annual Northeastern Anthropological Association Conference held at Bridgewater State University, March 8-11, 2012.<br>Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, facilitated the attendance of two Wells students at the 52nd Annual Northeastern Anthropological Association Conference held at Bridgewater State University in March of 2012. Frances Staiti presented her paper “Knock Knock, Who’s There: Friendship and Everyday Humor.”Rene Benda presented her poster “Three Local History Museums.”<br>Ernie Olson, Professor of Anthropology and Religion, presented his paper “Community Responses to Energy Resource Extraction” for the roundtable “Fractured Fairytales of Energy for the 21st Century Energy, Part II: Community-Generated Knowledge and Alternatives” held at the Society for Applied Anthropology Annual Conference, Baltimore, Maryland, March 28-31, 2012.
