The Visiting Writers Series and the Wells College Press are thrilled to welcome to campus Jennifer Tappenden, winner of the 2016 Wells College Press Chapbook Contest, for a reading to celebrate the publication of her new chapbook, “Independent City.” Tappenden will read from her work at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, in the Art Exhibit Room of Macmillan Hall on the Wells College campus. This event is free, and all are welcome to attend.

Tappenden’s chapbook “Independent City” was selected out of a pool of over 160 submissions. The Wells College Press letterpress-printed and hand-bound the chapbook, which features a wood engraving by Wesley Bates commissioned specifically for this project. The production of the chapbook is being overseen by Richard Kegler and Victor Hammer Fellow Heather Buechler with assistance from Wells College Press Intern Hannah Taggart ’18 and the invaluable aid, facilities and resources of Michael and Winifred Bixler at the Bixler Press & Letterfoundry.

Jennifer Tappenden is the founding editor of Architrave press. She earned a master’s in poetry from the University of Missouri – St. Louis where she also served as the university’s first Poet Laureate. Her poems have appeared in The Baltimore Review, Flyaway, Compose and elsewhere. Tappenden is a poetry editor for December magazine, an organizer of both the St. Louis Small Press Expo and UMSL’s Natural Bridge Debut Writers Series as well as an all-out-fool for gears, lead type and thick paper.
