The Wells College Center for Sustainability and the Environment presents a talk by Paula Turkon of Ithaca College titled “The Feasibility of Aquaponic Food Production in New York.” While conventional food production methods produce large amounts of food, they also require high energy input, deplete soil nutrients, add chemical runoff to natural water sources, and take up large expanses of land. In contrast, integrated agricultural systems work by mimicking nature’s systems to create productive agriculture with minimum input and closer to zero waste. This presentation will explore the feasibility of using aquaponics, a modernized version of an ancient integrative agricultural system in which fish waste is naturally converted into plant nutrients, as a way to increase the sustainability of food production in New York State.
This event will take place at 12:20 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Hostetter Lecture Room (209) of Stratton Hall on the Wells College campus. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.
