The Wells College String Room Gallery is pleased to host artist Margaret Inga Urías in conjunction with her solo exhibition Return to Me. The public is invited to join the artist for a reception and artist’s talk on Friday, November 11 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Urías will speak at 5:00 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view until December 7.

Return to Me features cosmologically-inspired drawings, photographs, engraved glass, sound and large-scale murals. With intense detail, a stark black-and-white palette and dramatic shifts in scale, Urías creates work developed out of her belief that dust, if examined closely enough, “could tell the story of everything that ever existed.”

This work has a formally elegant visual quality, whether in her meticulous drawings and engravings, tightly-cropped matte photographs or room-spanning murals. Urías creates abstracted images of shattered material and interstellar space, often referring to particles and fragmentation to signal both aftermath and origin. Included in this exhibition are works she created in response to the gallery’s unique layout, including two temporary large-scale murals executed by Wells College art students during the two weeks prior to the show’s opening.

Margaret Inga Urías works in Long Island City, Queens. She recently showed her work at the Bronx Museum of Arts and has constructed murals in public sites and buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Newark. She is the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She earned her master’s in Communications Design from Pratt Institute and a bachelor’s in English Language and Literature from Columbia University.

The String Room Gallery is a center for the exhibition of contemporary art in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is located on the Wells College campus in the southwest corner of the first floor of Main Building. Hours are Monday, Wednesday – Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. For more information about the show at Wells, please see the gallery’s website at www.wells.edu/stringroomgallery or contact Professor Katie Waugh at 315.364.3237.
