Richaela Primus ’12 will give a talk titled “Gendered and Racialized Spaces: Understanding the Experiences of Women in the New York City Community Garden Environment.” Globally, women comprise the majority of urban farmers. Similarly, most NYC garden projects are led by women concerned with changing their communities through gardening, by creating access to green space and healthy food. Some gardeners discover that city policies inhibit their ownership of and access to garden land while others describe race and class-based biases in funding opportunities and paid work available in urban agriculture. Primus graduated from Wells in 2012 and is pursuing a master’s from SUNY-ESF.

This event will take place at 12:20 p.m. Monday, February 8, in the Hostetter Lecture Room (209) of Stratton Hall on the Wells College campus. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.
