From Wells to Wellness: Stories from a Kaienke”haka Woman

Wells College’s First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program presents a talk by Sarah Konwahahawi Rourke ’03 titled “From Wells to Wellness: Stories from a Kaienke”haka Woman.” This event will take place at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, in the Art Exhibit Room of Macmillan Hall. All are welcome!

Sarah Konwahahawi Rourke is of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation and belongs to the Deer Clan. She is the wife of Atohnwa. As a longhouse woman, Konwahahawi strives to set a good path for the future generations. She is the Manager of the Native North American Travelling College, a cultural center and museum that focuses on cultural revitalization, education and dispelling stereotypes of First Nations people; and she is the President of the Onake II Board that runs the Tsiionkwanatiio Heritage Site, a community center for cultural education, planting and youth activities.

Konwahahawi has traveled to the UN Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues for 2013 and 2014 with the Native Youth Sexual Health Network to read statements on Sexual Health, Environmental Violence, Policing Injustice and Good Governance. She has provided youth mentorship to the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus, is a proud mentor for the Indigenous Young Woman’s Council, and is an ally and advocate for LGBTQ as she actively provides and promotes safe spaces for our youth and community. She is also one of the lead organizers in assisting to bring the Walking with Our Sisters Art Installation to Akwesasne in November of 2015.

Konwahahawi is currently working on her master’s in Educational Leadership at St. Lawrence University.
