How do I register for a pre-professional program?

You can select a pre-professional program when you declare your major. Students can declare their majors as early as the first week of classes during their first semester, or as late as the last day of the semester in which they earn 60 credits (usually at the end of sophomore year). Students wishing to enter a pre-professional program should consult with their advisor or the Director of Academic Advising.

How many classes should I sign up for the first semester?

All incoming first-semester students must take SC 100 and SC 101. It is then generally recommended to add one to two courses in the student's intended major and one to two courses of general education requirements. Students should take around four or five 3-credit courses for a total of 15 credits. In order to be full-time a student must be enrolled in at least 12 credits. In order to graduate in four years, a student must average 15 credits a semester.

Can SC100 and SC101 be taken in separate semesters during my first year?

No. These courses are designed to be taken during the first semester on campus. Both courses help students transition not just to college, but specifically to Wells!

Can I sign up for 200-level courses as a new student?

Generally first-year students will take 100-level courses, but certain 200-level courses are appropriate for a first-year student. Contact the Director of Academic Advising if you want to ask about specific courses.

When will faculty advisors be assigned?

You will receive a faculty advisor in mid to late June. All students will meet with their faculty advisor during orientation in order to review their schedule and get to know them.

When is the class drop deadline? Can I withdraw from a course before then without penalties?

You can drop a full semester course within the first 10 class days of the semester (2 weeks). After that time, and through the 7th week of classes, you can withdraw from a course. Dropping a course means it disappears from your record, withdrawing means it remains on your transcript with a grade of W.

What if I want to register for more than 16 credits?

Wells highly encourages first semester students to remain at or below 16 credits. We have found that students do better academically in their first semester when they have 16 or fewer credits. If you want to take more you can petition the Committee on Academic Standing. You can work with your advisor during orientation, or contact Nicole for more information about the process.

What are the general education / Sustainable Community requirements?

You are required to complete the Sustainable Community curriculum before graduating. See the checklist here (opens in a new tab). New students do NOT need to do all of these courses in one year, and only one course per category is needed.

I am a transfer student. Which classes should I sign up for?

Please contact Nicole Pellegrino through e-mail or at 315-364-3240 for assistance on signing up for courses as a transfer student.
