Wells College hosted a community dinner in support of the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department Friday evening in Sommer Center.

The fire department is raising money for a new ambulance. Wells College President Jonathan Gibralter showed his support and gratitude for the AVFD by asking the members of the AVFD to stand and be recognized. Gibralter encouraged attendees to donate to their cause.

Wells College President Jonathan Gibralter speaks at the Community Dinner in Sommer Center Feb. 23 to help the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department raise money for a new ambulance.

“Wells College could not survive without you,” Gilbralter said in his opening speech at the event. “The equipment that they use every day is enormously expensive. So, this boot is not to kick me in the rear end. Before you leave, I know how grateful they would be if you could help us support the fire department, so that they can be on their journey to purchase a new much-needed ambulance.”

A rubber boot was left near the podium for attendees to put money in if they chose to donate. As an all-volunteer agency, the AVFD is funded by donations and through the Aurora-Ledyard Fire District. Their members are trained to provide fire, medical, and other emergency services to its community, and most of their members have other jobs, are retired, or are students at Wells. According to the college’s Conference and Events Services Office, $1,660 was raised for the AVFD that night.

Gibralter, Aurora Mayor Jim Orman, and members of the clergy were present to give opening remarks and enjoy the event. Food was provided by Hallmark Dining from Wells, the Inns of Aurora, and home-cooked dishes from community members.

Donations to the AVFD can be made through their website, through Venmo @AuroraFD-NY, or by scanning the QR code below. Follow Wells College on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for more campus news and events.
