THE HOUSING SELECTION PROCESS TIMELINE

Registering for classes

All students must register for Fall 2024 classes by April 25, 2024 in order to participate in the Housing Selection process. If you have not registered for any classes by the deadline, you will not be able to participate in the room draw. If you register late, you will have a number assigned to you after all eligible students have participated in Room Draw.

Additionally, late registration or not registering for any classes will jeopardize your application for any special interest housing options such as quad rooms, triples, and Fairlane apartments.

Lottery Numbers

Students will be given pre-selected lottery numbers for Room Draw. This lottery number is based on the following formula:

  • credits earned through Winter 2024 semester
  • cumulative GPA as of Winter 2024 semester

Once lottery numbers are determined, they begin ranked starting at 1. This will determine the order that residents are able to select their housing assignment. These numbers may not be traded amongst residents; all must keep the number they are assigned. If more than one person has the same number of credits + GPA, a random order will be determined to create lottery numbers.

The more credits a student has earned plus the higher their GPA will mean a lower lottery number and an early pick at Room Draw. The person with Lottery #1 would be the first to pick, #2 second, etc…

All students eligible to go through Room Draw will be notified on Friday, April 26, 2024 via their Wells email of their lottery number. Lottery Numbers will not be posted publicly; each resident will be sent an email containing their Lottery number to their Wells email, so they have a general idea of where they fall in the order to select rooms in their class standing group.

For more information on academic standing/classification, please see the FAQs.

Room Draw

The final step in Housing Selection is Room Draw, in which students will physically pick out their rooms for the 2024-2025 academic year. Room Draw will begin at the time listed below (or until we have moved through all numbers). We encourage students to arrive prior to their scheduled time and we’ll move through numbers as quickly as possible. If you are not present when your number is called, we will move to the next number and you will pick your room before the next number is called

TENTATIVE – Monday, April 29th

Students who have been approved for a medical single will pick rooms. More information on this process will be available by April 25, 2024 and emailed to student’s Wells email on April 26.

TENTATIVE – Tuesday, April 30th

  • 5:30pm for those who are approved for a quad/triple/Fairlane apartment (you’ll be emailed on Friday, April 28, 2023 if you have received one of these options)
  • 5:45pm for Lottery Numbers 0 through 60
  • 6:10pm for Lottery Numbers 61 through 120
  • 6:30pm for Lottery Numbers 121 and above.

Floor plans of the residence halls are posted on the Residence Life section of The Globe, so students are encouraged to take a look and figure out where they want to live BEFORE attending Room Draw. The Room Draw process is quick, and if someone is taking a long time deciding, others will be able to go in front of them. Not all rooms on floor plans will be available at room draw. We set aside certain rooms for RA rooms, emergency spaces, facility work that is needed, etc… At Room Draw you will see the floor plans of what is available.

All students must be present to select their room. If a student cannot make the Room Draw (abroad, class, athletic practice, etc), they must designate a Proxy to select a room for them. Please see the Q & A section on Proxies, below, for more information.

During Room Draw, students will be called to select their room based on the order of their lottery numbers. No student can select a double room by themselves, nor can a student “save” a spot for another resident. If you select a double room by yourself, Residence Life will consolidate students together so you will have a roommate. If you are trying to live with someone that is not eligible to go through Room Draw, we suggest you fill out the waitlist form at the end of Room Draw to let Residence Life know your intentions.

Your roommate must have a lottery number as well, and accompany you to the Room Draw. The roommates will enter the Room Draw using the lowest lottery number. If you plan on choosing a single room, it is recommended that you have plans for a roommate in the event that a single room is not available during your selection. Single occupancy rooms cost an additional $500 a semester.

Please note: Housing changes happen during the semester and the summer. If there is an open space in a room, the Office of Residence Life will consolidate rooms or place another person in that open space.

The students that are selected to room with a DWCLA roommate will coordinate with the Office of Residence Life to select a room before Room Draw.

ADDITIONAL HOUSING OPTIONS AND ACCOMMODATIONS

All students looking for any sort of accommodation, no matter the type, must fill out the Housing Accommodation form found on the Globe, and then must fill out the appropriate supplemental application- medical, gender-based, or Housing exemption, also found on the Globe.

  • Medical Accommodations: Students that have a medical need to have a single or other housing accommodations must fill out required paperwork by the Coordinator of Accessibility Services and Learning Support. To begin that process, email accessibility@wells.edu. All requests will be reviewed by the Coordinator of Disability Services & Learning Support and the Office of Residence Life, and any other campus official if necessary. All Medical Accommodation Forms MUST be received by 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 in order to be considered. Any application received after that point will be placed on a Waitlist for a single or other medical need, and cannot be guaranteed. Misrepresentation of a medical or mental health condition is a violation of the Honor Code, in addition to Federal and State laws. Applying for a medical single is a request, not a guarantee, regardless of when the application is turned in. Please note that a “medical single” does not elicit the single fee being waived; priority placement or other accommodations can fulfill such applications.

Priority placement is defined as being able to select a room (single (as available for the single fee) or double room with a requested roommate) before Housing Selection to ensure proper placement, or to be placed in a building or floor with private bathrooms, or other accommodations.

Please note that all accommodations must be re-requested every academic year. If you were granted an accommodation this past year, we will continue that accommodation for 2024-2025, including emotional support animals. You may be required to submit updated information or other materials. Contact Accessibility@wells.edu for more information. Those granted housing accommodations will not go through Room Draw, and will be placed in housing prior to Room Draw.

  • Housing Exemption: Wells College is a residential campus, so it is expected that all students live on-campus for their time at Wells. However, if a student wishes to live off-campus, they must apply for an exemption. Students that are currently living off-campus must apply every year for a Housing Exemption.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is my lottery number based on?

In terms of what your lottery number is based on, it is based on your earned academic credits earned as Winter 2023 semester plus your cumulative GPA as of Winter 2023, NOT your social standing. If you have been at Wells for 2 years and are socially a sophomore, but you have enough credits, you could be a Junior, and you would have a higher lottery number then someone else with less credits earned. If you feel that your credits are wrong, please make sure to connect with the Registrar BEFORE Room draw. Please note we round up to the nearest whole credit number.

What if I am currently a senior, and will be returning to Wells for a 5th year? Do I get to choose my room before everyone else?

As long as you have more credits earned than other students + your cumulative GPA then yes you would pick sooner.

What if I don’t have a roommate, and I am not going to get a single room?

f you do not have a roommate and a single is not available or you do not want a single, you will either be randomly placed with someone of the same gender during Room Draw or consolidated together with another person of the same gender after Room Draw.

During Room Draw, when you enter into a double room by yourself, any following individual person of the same gender as you that comes up can be placed in that double room with you. If someone of a differing gender wishes to pick that spot, you will be contacted with the choice to consent to a gender neutral room or to decline that. Double rooms will not be assigned as singles. Residence Life reserves the right to move 2 students in 2 different double rooms into 1 double room prior.

What if I can’t make it to Room Draw?

It is necessary that all students attend Room Draw, even if you are not sure of your plans for next year. The only students not able to participate are those confirmed to be going abroad in the Fall, or those that do not meet eligibility requirements. If you cannot make Room Draw, you will need to designate a Proxy to go through the process for you. This proxy will attend room draw for you and choose your room. Residence Life will contact you via your email to confirm the room chosen for you.

If I am applying for Fairlane, a triple, quad, etc. will I still be assigned a Lottery Number?

Yes! Students that are approved for an apartment or other housing option will be assigned a lottery number. We will use those lottery numbers to determine who will receive those spaces and in what order they will pick.

What if I have additional questions about the Housing Selection Process?

You are in luck! Stop by the Office of Residence Life during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm), email residencelife@wells.edu, or stop by Sommer Center to talk with Ryan Steinberg or Jack Bjorkander.
