Proposed Vision, Mission and Values

As we work together in the development of a new strategic plan, the steering committee has proposed new language for the College’s vision and core values; the College’s mission statement and honor code remain unchanged.

The vision, mission and core values will be discussed with campus constituencies in upcoming forums and discussion groups.

Vision (proposed)

Built upon the core values of a liberal arts education, Wells provides a uniquely intimate, supportive learning environment where interdisciplinary, experiential academic curricula and a community-minded campus culture prepare students for meaningful careers and to make exceptional, positive impact on their chosen spheres of influence.

The mission of Wells College is to educate students to think critically, reason wisely, and act humanely as they cultivate meaningful lives. Through Wells' academic program, residential atmosphere, and community activities, students learn and practice the ideals of the liberal arts. The Wells experience prepares students to appreciate complexity and difference, to embrace new ways of knowing, to be creative, and to respond ethically to the interdependent worlds to which they belong. Committed to excellence in all areas of its reach, Wells College equips students for lifelong learning and for sharing the privileges of education with others.

Core Values (proposed)

Challenge: Learning founded on challenging and intellectual inquiry, requiring active student engagement, resulting in a transformative student experience.

Community: Providing a welcoming and supportive space to live, learn and socialize

Creativity: Encouraging originality of thought and expression, imagining new ways of being and doing

Empathy: Awareness and sensitivity to difference that encourages open-mindedness and responsible action

Equity: People as unique individuals; ensuring equitable access to opportunity, inclusion and resources for all

Integrity: Actions by those within the community as governed by the honor code

Support: Continuous emotional, intellectual and social development which involves self-reflection and ongoing adaptation; all are afforded thoughtful and informed support and guidance

Honor Code

Community honor shall be the basis of student government at Wells College. The principle of community honor is based on the pledge of each member of the student body to be honest and trustworthy in the conduct of her or his collegiate life as it is defined or encompassed by the Collegiate Constitution. Wells College students are under community obligation and pledge not to lie, cheat, steal, deceive, or conceal in the conduct of their collegiate life as defined or encompassed by the Collegiate Constitution. Each student is obligated to report violations of community honor involving her or himself to a member of the appropriate judicial body within 24 hours. A member of the student body, member of the faculty, or member of the administration or staff who is witness to a violation (or an admission of a violation) of community honor has the responsibility to urge the offender to report her or himself. If the offender fails to do so, the obligation falls to the witness.

Our mission is for every student to think critically, reason wisely and act humanely as they cultivate meaningful lives. On our beautiful lakeside campus, students gain the knowledge, skills and experience to create their own unique path.
