Campus Events: May, 1996 |
Wells College senior Patricia Driscoll will present her work in a one woman
show in the String Room Gallery in Main Building on the Wells College
campus. The show runs May 13 through June 1.
An opening reception will be held on Monday, May 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This event is free and the public is invited to attend.
This show is a culmination of work produced during Driscoll's senior year at Wells. The work focuses on the expressive, through the exploration of various types of media.
Driscoll has an individualized major in art therapy. "I claim to be neither a painter nor a sculptor," she says, "but an individual who uses painters' and sculptors' medium to express emotion. Emotion transformed into creative energy that imbues the innermost hidden parts of the soul."
The artist resides in the township of Fleming, New York, with her husband and two children and plans to attend graduate school in the field of expressive therapies.
String Room Gallery Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Aurora, New York.... Rebecca Harris-Warrick of Cornell University will present a lecture/demonstration, "Rediscovering a Musical Heritage," assisted by NYS Baroque on Monday, May 13, at 8:00 p.m. in Barler Auditorium on the Wells College campus. Admission is free and the public is invited.
During the evening, Professor Harris-Warrick and NYS Baroque will
lead their audience into the world of the 17th and 18th centuries.
They will explain the properties of six baroque instruments -
flute, recorder, oboe, bassoon, theorbo, and harpsichord - and
describe the settings and social events in which their characteristic
sounds had particular social uses.
The music of the baroque period was often written for specific occasions at the request of patrons from the aristocracy, the church, or the middle classes. The presenters will bring the audience into five different social situations, accompanying their lively descriptions with slides of locales, events, and performers. They will introduce the baroque instruments used in each situation, discuss the ways they differ from their modern counterparts, and play a work suitable for the occasion.
Rebecca Harris-Warrick is assistant professor of music at Cornell University. She received her B.A. from Brandeis University and her D.M.A. from Stanford University. She is chief editor of the new critical edition of the works of Jean-Baptiste Lully and co-author of a major history, Musical Theater at the Court of Louis XIV.
Professor Harris-Warrick will be joined by members of the NYS Baroque, Peter Hedrick, Elizabeth Hedrick, and Deborah Fox. NYS Baroque was established in 1985 as the Genessee Baroque Players. At present, NYS Baroque is the only period instrument orchestra based outside a large urban center.
