Ms. Foundation President to Speak at Wells College

Marie C. Wilson, President, MS. Foundation for Women

Marie Wilson, president of the Ms. Foundation for Women, will discuss her career as an advocate for women’s issues at Wells College on Wednesday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. in the Art Exhibit Room in Macmillan Hall. Her address is free and open to the public.

As a leader of the only national multi-issue women’s fund in the United States, Wilson has offered critical leadership in the areas of women’s economic empowerment, safeguarding reproductive rights, and supporting health and safety for women and girls.

Under Wilson’s leadership, the Ms. Foundation has become a leading sponsor of Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Now in its seventh year, this phenomenal public education program struck a chord with Americans and put girls’ issues and concerns on the national agenda.

Wilson has raised and administered tens of millions of dollars for programs and organizations serving women and girls. She established and raised the Foundation’s $10 million endowment fund to ensure that women and girls will always have a source of crucial funds.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University, she began her professional life as a pre-school teacher. Her first-hand experiences in education and lobbying for women’s and children’s issues earned her an appointment as the Director of Women’s Programs at Drake University. There she designed programs on cutting-edge issues such as employment re-training, minority career development, childcare, job sharing, and flexible work time.

As vice president and director of education and human resources for the Iowa Bankers Association, she consulted with the association’s 650 member banks, and gained expertise in private and public-sector joint ventures. This would ultimately position her as one of the foremost not-for-profit fund-raisers - and advocates for women and families.

Sponsored by the college’s Leadership Connection group, the leader-in-residence program brings outstanding women who are recognized leaders in their fields to campus each semester to teach, meet with students informally, and present public lectures.

The José Greco II Flamenco Dance Company stars José Greco II and features his sister, Carmela. The Los Angeles Times said "Greco II has long since moved out of his father's shadow to become a star of unique heat and incandescence."

José Greco II, born in Madrid, is the son of José Greco and Lola de Ronda. Beginning his dance studies at the age of 17 with the National Ballet of Spain's School of Dance, he joined his sister Carmela Greco's Ballet Estampas in 1982, touring Europe, Africa, and the Middle East as premier dancer of the company.

In 1986 José formed his own company and toured Europe and Japan. After an extended engagement in Monte Carlo, he returned to Spain to appear as guest artist with Mario Maya's Flamenco Ballet and star as "El Ginete Caballo" (The Death Rider) in the acclaimed production of Garcia Lorca's "Amargo."
