Friday, November 7 through Sunday November 9

Wells College production features work by 17th century female playwright

The Wells College Theatre Department will perform Aphra Behn's The City Heiress Friday, November 7 through Sunday November 9 in Macmillan Hall's Phipps Auditorium.

Show times are 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $4, $6 and $8 for evening performances and $3, $5 and $7 for the matinee.

Behn's play, written in 1682, examines the main concerns of the Restoration age: politics, sex and money. The play opens on the street, where Tom Wilding is engaged in an argument with his uncle. Once Sir Timothy disinherits his nephew, the stage is set for all of the characters as they plot to acquire fortune, fame and spouses. Using wit for weapons and deceit for desire, the play unfolds taking the audience on a journey filled with laughter.

Behn began her professional writing career after she was imprisoned for debt and released. Her first play, The Forced Marriage, was produced in 1670. On the basis of its immediate success, Behn's next work was produced within six months. She continued writing plays interspersed with fiction, poetry and translation for the rest of her life. Aphra Behn died in England in 1689.

Tickets are available by calling the Wells College Box Office at 315.364.3456.

Chinese dance company performs at Wells College

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company The Nai Ni Chen Dance Company will perform traditional Chinese and contemporary dance on Saturday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Phipps Auditorium. Tickets are $2 for students and $6 for the general public.

Nai Ni Chen brings the rich tradition of Chinese art into the contemporary dance world. The multi-racial troupe's wide ranging repertory includes dances that originated over thousands of years ago along with highly abstract contemporary work.

The company's productions are not only pleasurable and an educational experience in contemporary Chinese culture, but also explore issues and ideas in the arts from the Chinese American community today.

Choreographer Nai Ni Chen has been working with her dancers since 1982. She has sought to integrate the concepts and aesthetics of Chinese classical art with the world of dance in America.

The themes of Chen's work range from the poetic drama in Chinese traditional legends to the highly abstract, elegant lines in Chinese calligraphy. Each dance reflects her personal vision as an Asian artist living in America. Chen's work has been performed at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in California, the Raymond Kravis Center in Florida, Duke University, and New York University.

Chen was born in Taiwan and started folk dancing when she was four years old. In 1973 she entered Chinese Culture College as a dance major and began professional training in dance and music. From 1976-80 she was selected to perform Chinese dance with several performing arts groups on a world tour, presenting Chinese dance in 17 countries.

She came to the United States in 1982 to further her study in choreography at New York University. In 1988 she formed her own company with several dedicated dancers with whom she worked.

Art exhibit features natural materials

(Please click on the image of the art work or the photo of Kate Timm for more detailed versions.)

Kate Timm in her studio The paintings of artists Al Bremmer and Kate Timm will be featured in the String Room Gallery on the Wells College campus. The show runs from Wednesday, November 19 through Friday, December 12. An opening reception will be held in honor of the artists on Wednesday, November 19. The show is free and open to the public.

Bremmer's mixed media work in the exhibition evolved from a linear, color-oriented, modernist point of view merged with a more recent, organic, three-dimensional approach. He uses natural objects such as corn leaves, wood, straw, and other materials that he finds in his native Sterling, New York. Bremmer's intent is to combine traditional painting media with organic forms to create subtle, visual metaphors about nature.

Bremmer was a professor of art and department chair at SUNY Oswego until his retirement in 1995. His work has been shown at the Schweinfurth Art Gallery in Auburn, New York; Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester; Cooperstown National Exhibition; and Westmoreland National Exhibition in Youngwood, Ohio.

Kate Timm: Goldfish When creating a still life, Kate Timm places emphasis on the use of vibrant colors, varied forms and shapes, the flow of light, and the gesture in loose but controlled brushwork. Timm's themes and the selection of still life materials reflect her interest in contemporary illusionistic painting and in the immediate setting. Garden vegetables, flowers, birds, houseplants, and collectibles form the nucleus of each still life composition. The inclusion of upstate New York farmland adds a visual drama to the work which is precipitated by the constant change in climate, time, light, and other natural forces.

Timm says that although it is unintentional, the rural landscape, a love of nature, gardening, birding, and a respect for the environment are attributes which give her work a personal signature.

Timm received her B.A. and M.A. from the State University of New York at Oswego. Her work has appeared at the Washington and Jefferson National Painting Exhibition in Washington, Penn.; The Butler National Painting Exhibition in Youngstown, Ohio; Cooperstown National Exhibition, Cooperstown, New York; and the Schweinfurth Art Gallery in Auburn, New York.
