An integrated musical and theatrical production created in celebration of
National Women's History Month will be presented in the Alice Barler
Recital Hall on the Wells College campus. The program, entitled Scenes and
Songs, will be held on Friday, March 10, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. and is free and
open to the public.
Scenes and Songs is the collaborative effort of two Wells faculty members, Susan Forbes, associate professor of theatre, and Susan Sandman, professor of music. The program alternates scenes from The Second Coming of Joan of Arc and The Tragedy of Antonie with selections of music as performed by Elizabethan Conversation, the nationally acclaimed Renaissance music group.
Begun in 1982 by Susan Sandman and Derwood Crocker as a Renaissance lute duet, Elizabethan Conversation achieves musically pleasing and exciting performances on period instruments. This program includes lutes, psaltery, and medieval fiddle and voice. The group will perform medieval and renaissance pieces to complement the theatrical portions of the program. Guest soprano, Marian Hanson, will appear in this special production.
Joan of Arc led an army to victory at age 17. At 18, she arranged the coronation of a king. At 19, she went up against the Catholic Church and lost. In The Second Coming of Joan of Arc by feminist playwright Carolyn Gage, Joan returns to share her story with contemporary women. Susan Forbes performs this one-woman monologue.
Several Wells students in the advanced acting class will perform a scene from The Tragedy of Antonie, written in 1590 by Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke. This classic play portrays the passion shared by Antony and Cleopatra.
