Time: Gallery Hours are Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM; Wednesday nights, 7-9 PM;
and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 PM
Place: String Room Gallery
Please join the art faculty and students for the annual Student Art Show. Students enrolled in studio art classes during the Fall 2000 semester will exhibit their work. The show opens on Wednesday evening; artists will be introduced and will discuss their work and answer questions.

Jazz Violinist: Miri Ben-Ari

Growing up in Israel, Miri Ben-Ari studied classical violin under renowned violinist Isaac Stern. Ben-Ari, now a famous jazz violinist, has performed and recorded with the Israeli Army String Quartet, the late Betty Carter, Les Paul, the Manhattan Transfer, Luther Vandross, and Wynton Marsalis. Talk: "Go Girl!": Mariah Burton Nelson

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Wells College Dean of Students Office is pleased to present, “Go Girl!  How to Succeed in School, Sports and Life,” a dynamic motivational talk by the nation’s first nationally syndicated women’s sports columnist, Mariah Burton Nelson, pioneering professional athlete, author and speaker. 

Nelson, the author of four books, including the acclaimed, The Stronger Women Get, The More Men Love Football, has been inducted into the National Women’s Sports Hall of Fame and has appeared on Dateline, Crossfire, Today, Good Morning America, and Larry King Live. Student Recital: Music and Coffee

Place: Barler Recital Hall
The Wells College Consort will play a beautiful new medieval bowed string instrument, designed by Derwood Crocker. Replicated from a 13th century manuscript design, its creation was paid for by Wells Consort Alumnae early instrument fund members, Gayle Rawson, ’88; Heather Mathewson, ’88; Sharon Munger, ’87, and Jennifer Hagberg ’88, and others. Called a medieval fiddle, the instrument is made of cherry tailpiece, spruce face and mahogany.

In recognition of the importance of celebrating, honoring, and sharing traditions across cultures, beliefs, and practices, the student group P.O.W.E.R. (Praising Our Work, Ethnicity, and Race), has teamed with area residents, faculty, students, staff, and college officials to present this annual event.

Colloquium / Prelaw Meeting: Nell Mohn '80: "Sexual Harrassment: One Woman's Odyssey"
Time: 12:30 PM
Place: Chapel, Main Building
Nell and her client will discuss a case that Nell litigated and settled involving harassment over a period of time in a male-dominated workplace (manufacturing).  They will talk about the forms of harassment, why they sued, and how they "won." Nell was an economics major at Wells with a JD from University at Buffalo Law School.  She has a law practice in Buffalo.

Binghamton University Art Professor Don DeMauro's paintings and sculptures will be presented. Anna DeMauro's, Don's daughter's, recent works will also be shown. The show opens on Wednesday evening. The artists will be introduced and be available to answer questions.  Painting by Don DeMauro.

Please join us for a lively talk by Dr. Assata Zerai, Syracuse University. Dr. Zerai will lecture on struggle and progress for African American women in a talk titled, "Making a Way Outta No Way." This event is sponsored by Women's Studies and occurs in conjunction with Multicultural Awareness Week.

Concert: Brian Dykstra: "Piano Rags and Cuban Danzas"
Time: 8 PM
Place: Barler Recital Hall
Please come hear renowned pianist and composer Brian Dykstra, a graduate of the Julliard and Eastman Schools of Music, and a professor of music at the College of Wooster in Ohio. Preceding the performance, a sampling of foods from Lating American countries will be served. Voluntary donations for the food will go to help the victims of the recent earthquakes in El Salvador. Dykstra's performance is sponsored by the Wells College Music Department and the food is sponsored by the Latin American students, students of Spanish, and the Spanish Club. Admission: $5.00 for the general public; free to Wells Community members 
Don't miss this music and entertainment extravaganza, featuring the incomparable Dar Williams, live in concert. Special guests Rob Paravonian, Master of Ceremonies; Neural Groove, Syracuse's award-winning modern rock band; and Sankofa, North Carolina's premiere acid jazz/hip hop band are sure to enthrall.

A reception in Morgan Hall follows the program. This event is free and open to the public. 
Proprietor of the Warwick Press in Easthampton, Massachusettes since 1973, Carol J. Blinn will discuss her life's work as a typographic designer, book artist, commercial letterpress printer, paper decorator, hand bookbinder, and private press publisher during an exclusive engagement at Wells College May 2-3, 2001.

Henry's VIII, CD Release Concert
Time: 8 PM
Place: Barler Auditorium
Henry's VIII, a student-organized double quartet vocal group formed in the early 1940s, is named after Wells College founder, Henry Wells. Henry's VIII  performs on campus and at other area spots. The group has toured major cities along the East Coast, and has several albums to its credit. Recital:  Daniyar Mukhtarov, renowned pianist from the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, will perform. 
Time: 8 PM
Place: Barler Auditorium
Kyrgyz pianist Daniyar Mukhtarov makes his United States debut at Wells College in an exclusive engagement this evening. The concert will feature the US premiere of the "Suite for Piano" by contemporary Kyrgyz composer, Murat Begaliev. Piano works by Tschaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Chopin, Scarlatti and Mozart complete the program. The concert is free and open to the public. Mr. Mukhtarov's visit is sponsored by the Arts and Performance Department at Wells College. 

Daniyar Mukhtarov comes from a family of musicians. His father, the late Khusein Mukhtarov, was a Soviet National Artist who sang with the Bolshoi and Kirov Theatre. His mother , dramatic soprano Esen Moldokulova, is currently the director of the Kyrgyz State opera. Daniyar Mukhtarov has performed as a pianist and conductor all over the world, Russia, Kazahkstan, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, France, Poland and others. A graduate of the Moscow State Conservatory, he was first prize winner of the Soviet National Competition of USSR Composers and has won recognition in Kyrgyz National Musical Competition and The International Casagrande Piano Competition in Terni, Italy. He has performed extensively on State Television and Radio, making his first live television appearance at ten years of age.   Enlarged photo of Daniyar Mukhtarov.

Aurora residents and Wells community members are cordially invited to attend a Public Meeting on Monday, May 14th at the Morgan Opera House. Laura Memeger will present the findings of Urban Partners from its recent focus groups and surveys, Lisa Marsh Ryerson and Pleasant Rowland will discuss the plans of the new foundation, Jay Woolford and Grace Chiang will preview the renovations for the Aurora Inn. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.
