EXHIBITION BY ARTIST MONICA TAP OPENS AT WELLS COLLEGE
show titled "Road Work" features oil paintings by Toronto artist.

Aurora, New York-- The Wells College Visual Arts Department presents the exhibit "Road Work," by Toronto Artist Monica Tap, on display in the College's String Room Gallery (SRG) from October 17 through December 5. The exhibit is free and the public is cordially invited to view the show. An artist's reception will be held on Wednesday, December 5 from 6 to 8 pm; refreshments will be served.

Tap's artwork explores questions of time and representation in painting, opening up a space between landscape and abstraction. She navigates the terrain between painting and other media, basing her current work on QuickTime videos of the landscape captured from buses, cars and trains. Over the past fifteen years her canvases, which she describes as "conceptual and systematic investigations into the codes of pictorial illusionism and perception," have been exhibited in Canada, London, England and New York. She is the recipient of many grants and awards, most recently from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for her project, "Translation as a Strategy of Renewal in Painting."

Tap's work is represented in many private, corporate and public collections in Canada and the United States. Originally from Alberta, Monica Tap completed her BFA (1990) and MFA (1996) degrees at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She currently lives in Toronto and is an associate professor at the University of Guelph.

The String Room Gallery is a center for the exhibition of contemporary art in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is located on the Wells College campus in the southwest corner of the first floor of Main Building. Hours are Monday through Friday from 12 to 5 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.

For more information about the exhibition, please see the gallery's website at www.wells.edu/stringroomgallery or contact Professor William Ganis at 315.364.3465.
