Schwartz Athletics Center Gets a Facelift

At Wells, the lives of many students and the spirit of the school itself are enhanced by sport, whether as an intramural activity, on an intercollegiate team, or an impromptu pick up game.  In order to provide top-notch facilities for our student-athletes, Phase One of the College's athletic facilities renovations got underway last summer and continues to move forward. These significant improvements to the Schwartz Athletic Center will augment the fitness, sports, and wellness programs at Wells.

Once construction of the beautifully redesigned entrance is complete, visitors will enter past a wall of curved glass and be greeted by a student receptionist at the main circulation desk. The former snack bar portico area in front of the indoor pool will now contain a large state-of-the-art fitness center overlooking the campus and lake. Each piece of new equipment – including treadmills, ellipticals, Arc Trainers and a Cybex Eagle strength training circuit – will have its own personal video panel. A men's locker room is being expanded, and the old weight room is being transformed into a new men's shower room. In a future phase of the project, the women’s locker room will be updated, the sports medicine training room will be moved and enlarged, and coaches' offices enhanced.

Recent outdoor projects include a complete resurfacing of the four existing tennis courts and building a new soccer field. Development of cross-country running trails continues this spring.

If construction continues on time, the improved facilities will be available for use by the college community before the end of the Spring 2006 semester.
