Wells College and Cayuga Community College Partner for Sustainable Agriculture Symposium

11-02-12 - Two days of events explore the ins and outs of responsible environmental production.

Wells College welcomes Dr. Jyotsna Meshram, Dr. Sudhir Umaji Meshram and special guests from Cayuga Community College (CCC) as part of a shared Sustainable Agriculture Symposium. The Symposium, which is based around themes of environmental concerns and food production both local and international, will begin on Thursday, November 1, with a number of events and discussions on the grounds of CCC and continue through Friday, November 2, with a pair of farm tours and a plenary lecture by Dr. Jyotsna Meshram held on the Wells College campus.

On Friday, November 2, leading up to Dr. Jyotsna Meshram’s plenary lecture, participants are invited to join in a pair of farm visits. At 9 a.m. the Bob and Sharon Horsford Vegetable Farm in Weedsport, N.Y., will offer a tour and talk about the ways that they grow and distribute fresh produce to the area; and at 10:30 a.m. Spruce Haven Farms in Union Springs, N.Y., will introduce participants to the more than 1,800 milking cows that live on their 3,000 feed-cropped acres.

Then, at 12:40 p.m., Dr. Jyotsna Meshram, a Professor of Chemistry at India’s Nagpur University, will give the plenary session titled “Green Chemistry” in the Hostetter Lecture Room (209) of Stratton Hall on the Wells College campus. Dr. Meshram’s talk will address ongoing scientific and chemical advances involving products which possess little or no toxicity to human health and the environment. She will discuss how, with pressure increasing to address environmental concerns in manufacturing, organic chemists can play a significant role in effecting a sustainable society. This talk is also a part of the weekly Wells College Science Colloquium series.

In the afternoon, Wells will also offer tours of the recently-constructed science building Stratton Hall by Professor of Chemistry Christopher Bailey, and the admissions office will lead tours of the rest of campus.
