WHAT ARE PERIODICALS?
Periodicals are continuous
publications such as journals, newspapers, or magazines. They are
issued regularly (daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly). The Periodicals
List (Alternate
Link to Periodicals List) at the top of the Online Catalog
(Online Catalog) screen lists
all the periodicals in the Wells Library.
The Online Catalog itself
(some campus users may have to access it via this alternate
link to Online Catalog) includes these periodical titles.
To find a periodical article,
use periodical indexes.

FINDING PERIODICAL
ARTICLES
When You Don't Have the
Citation to a Specific Article, Use the Periodical Indexes
When you don't have a citation
to a specific article, but you do want to find articles
-
on a certain subject
-
by a specific author or authors,
or
-
with a known article title
Use one or more periodical
indexes.
Periodical indexes may be
in paper format or electronic format, or both.
How do you know which
periodical index to use?
First determine what kind
of periodicals you want. Do you want
If you want
all 3 kinds
of articles, use ProQuest,
available from any computer on the Wells campus.
If you want articles from
scholarly
or research journals, ask a library staff member to recommend an index
for your topic, or look at the topic list on FirstSearch.
If you want popular or
substantive articles of general interest, use Readers' Guide
to Periodical Literature, available in print form and electronic form viaFirstSearch.
If you want newspaper
articles, use ProQuestor

LOCATING PERIODICALS
IN THE WELLS COLLEGE LIBRARY
All periodicals in the Wells
College Library are shelved in alphabetical order by title. Use the
Periodicals
List (Alternate
Link to Periodicals List) to see their location on campus.
*CURRENT ISSUES: Most
current (recent, unbound) periodicals are shelved opposite the Main Desk
on the
sloping shelves.
The current issues of certain
periodicals are kept behind the Main Desk. These titles are merely
noted in the appropriate place on the sloping shelves where they would
have been.
*BACK ISSUES:Back
issues of periodicals usually are bound, and then shelved with bound
volumes on the first floor (lower level) of Long Library in alphabetical
order.
Sometimes the older volumes
are on microfiche or microfilm. Their location is noted on the Periodicals
List.
*NEWSPAPERS: Current
issues are shelved on the Newspaper Rack / additional sloping shelves south
of the Main Desk. Older issues of the New York Times
and the Auburn Citizen are on microfilm behind the Main Desk.
*DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARIES:
Current issues & bound volumes of some science periodicals are shelved
in Zabriskie Hall. Bound volumes of art periodicals are shelved
in Morgan Hall.
*EJOURNALS / FULL TEXT
/ FULL IMAGE: of many periodical articles are available via ProQuest,
some FirstSearch databases,
Lexis-Nexis Academic, Newsbank,
PsycArticles,
and
Gale InfoTrac.
