HOW TO ORDER INTERLIBRARY LOANS

Please e-mail Hilary Dorsch (hdorsch@wells.edu) with questions or problems.

IF YOU ALREADY KNOW THE TITLE OR CITATION FOR A SOURCE:

For Books, CDs and DVDs:

1)  If you are looking for a book, CD or DVD, check to make sure the library doesn’t have it!  The online catalog is at http://opac.wells.edu/ .  Leave out articles at the beginning of the title, such as “the,” “a,” etc. (Also, leave out articles at the beginning of titles in foreign languages, such as “la,” “le,” “der,” etc.)

2)  Look up the item on WorldCat.  On the library’s database page (http://www.wells.edu/library/li2b.htm), click on “WorldCat” in the right-hand column.  Type in the title you are looking for.  Change the search box to read “title.”

3)  Click on the title you want.  Click on the ILL icon to the upper left, and input your name and e-mail. If there is no ILL icon, double-check to make sure the library does not own the item.

For Articles:

1)  If you have the citation for the article, check to make sure the library doesn’t have it!  On the library’s database page (http://www.wells.edu/library/li2b.htm), click on “Search by Journal Title” in the left-hand column.  Type in the name of the journal.  You’ll find not only the journals we have in our collection downstairs, but also online journals, where you can read or print the articles from your computer.  Check to make sure we have the correct year for the article you need.

2)  If we don’t have the article you want, go to the databases page, click on “FirstSearch”, and then scroll down to “ArticleFirst.”  Search for the article, and click on the title once you’ve found it.  Click on the ILL icon to the upper left, and input your name and e-mail.  If there is no ILL icon, double-check to make sure the library does not own the journal by clicking on “Search by Journal Title” on the database page.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE TITLE OR CITATION,
but want to SEARCH for books or articles on a topic:

For Books:

1)  Go to the databases page (http://www.wells.edu/library/li2b.htm).  Click on WorldCat, PsycInfo, or your favorite database for finding books.  Search by Keyword or Subject.

2)  If you are searching in WorldCat, when you have found a title you want, click on it. Click on the ILL icon to the upper left, and input your name and e-mail. If there is no ILL icon, double-check to make sure the library does not own the item.

3)  If you are NOT searching in Worldcat, but in another database, you MUST request the book through WorldCat to order it online.  Use your mouse to copy title, author, ISBN or other relevant info.  Open another window and begin a WorldCat search by clicking on WorldCat on the databases page.  Paste in the information you copied.  If you are searching for the title, change the search box to read “title.”  If you are searching by author, change it to “author,” and if you are searching by ISBN, change it to read “ISBN.”

4)  Follow step 2 (immediately above).

For Articles:

1)  Go to our databases page (http://www.wells.edu/library/li2b.htm). Select ProQuest, JSTOR, PsycArticles or your other favorite database.

2)  Search by Subject or Keyword.  Use the Advanced Search option when possible.

3)  If you find an article you want, and the article is available to you full-text in the database, you are done! Just read it or print it out.

4)  If you CANNOT access the full text of the article through the database, check to make sure Wells doesn’t have it elsewhere.  Often, an article that you can’t access in one database is available in our print collection downstairs or through one of our other online journal subscriptions.  To see if we have the article you need, open a separate window, go to the databases page and click on “Search by Journal Title.”  Search for the journal title you want and be aware of the year you need.

3)  If we still don’t have the article, go back to the databases page. Click on “FirstSearch”, and then scroll down to “ArticleFirst.”  Paste in the citation for your article.  Once you have found it, click on the title.  Click on the ILL icon to the upper left, and input your name and e-mail.

PLEASE NOTE:  All Interlibrary Loan items ordered online MUST be requested through WorldCat (for books and AV materials) or through ArticleFirst (for articles).  To order items found in other databases, you must search for the citation in either WorldCat or ArticleFirst and then place your request.

Questions? Problems? Please e-mail me at hdorsch@wells.edu, or stop by the ILL office, 8:30-4:30 Monday through Friday.  I’m always happy to help!
