INFORMATION
Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service through which we obtain books; videos/ DVDs/sound recordings for research or classroom use; and photocopies of journal and newspaper articles we do not own.  We order these materials from other libraries all over the United States.

WHO MAY USE IT?

Students, faculty, and staff at Wells College, Wells community spouses and children, and under certain circumstances, Aurora community residents.

LIMITATIONS:

We will not request a book or photocopy from a journal or newspaper that we already own unless our copy is missing.

Most libraries will not lend reference books, theses and dissertations, or rare or archival materials
.

All ILL material is subject to immediate recall by the lending library.

Overdue, recalled, lost or damaged ILLs: You will receive 2 warning overdue notices, 1 per week. We will bill your bookstore account in the 3rd week with a non-refundable charge of $75.

The Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S. Code) and the CONTU Guidelines restrict the number of articles that may be ordered per journal title.

HOW TO REQUEST AN ILL:
If you need full-text of an article immediately, use ProQuest, EBSCO Research Databases, Gale/NOVEL, JSTOR, or one of our other full-text databases. Ask a librarian for assistance.  You may send articles to print in the library print lab.

Other journal articles: Most FirstSearch databases allow you to order ILLs directly.  Click here for instructions.  You may also print and fill out a paper request form.

Books: Use the WorldCat database.  Click here for instructions.  You may also print and fill out a paper request form.

To order videos, DVDs, or sound recordings for research or classroom use, print and fill out a paper request form.

Paper request forms are available in the Electronic Resources Room or at the Circulation Desk.

WHAT DETAILS ARE REQUIRED?
Journal articles: journal title, volume, date, pagination, article title and author, and where you found the article.  Please include a printout whenever possible.

Books: author, title, publisher, date of publication, edition, ISBN if known.

Videos, DVDs, sound recordings: title, publisher, date of publication, date when needed for class use.

WHEN DOES AN ILL ARRIVE?
The length of time varies.  It can be anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.  You may ask about the status of your request at any time.

IS THERE A COST?
No.  We attempt to obtain materials first from libraries that do not charge.   Without written permission from you, we will not borrow material from libraries that charge.

Dissertations and theses are usually not available on ILL, but may be purchased for approximately $35.

HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED?
Books, videos, DVDs, sound recordings, microforms: by email.  You may sign for and pick up your ILLs at the Circulation Desk during regular library hours.

Photocopied articles: will be sent to you via the campus post office, and become your property.  Occassionally an article will be emailed as a pdf.

HOW LONG IS THE LOAN PERIOD?
The lending library determines the loan period.  It is usually 30 days.  The due date is on the blue band affixed to the cover.  An ILL may be recalled at any time.

CAN I RENEW AN ILL?
In most instances, yes.  See or send an email to Hilary Dorsch, resource sharing assistant, 3 to 5 days before the ILL is due to request a renewal.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Return ILL materials promptly – that means on or before the due date on the blue band.

Return a book immediately if it is recalled.  You will receive an email notification to do so.

Return ILLs to the Circulation Desk or to the resource sharing office.

Overdue, unreturned recalled, and lost ILLs result in a non-refundable $75 charge applied to your bookstore bill  and possible the loss of your borrowing privileges.  You will receive 2 courtesy reminder emails.

You are financially responsible for the damage or loss materials.

We reserve the right to revoke your borrowing priveleges.
