To Have and To Share 2002

By Kristine Swanson Munden ’90,
WCAA Vice President for Council

Every year at Alumnae Council, alumnae volunteers come back to campus and learn about the Wells community today, attend training workshops and group meetings, and build connections with each other.

Planning Your Giving to Wells
The first weekend in October, 50 alumnae from all over the United States gathered in Aurora for an eventful, informative weekend. Alumnae heard from senior staff members about student recruitment, community life, institutional finances, fundraising goals and initiatives, and experiential learning.  Alumnae engaged in dialogue with the senior team, and learned how they can assist Wells in sharing information with fellow alumnae and potential students, and furthering the College’s goals and initiatives.

Volunteer training workshops were centered on areas where alumnae have a direct effect on the success of the College: student recruitment, alumnae giving, and building connections. Gwen Webber-McCleod, director of communications, led the building connections session and facilitated discussion about the mission of Wells College and how alumnae can apply that to their interactions with each other and the outside world.

In the evening President Lisa Marsh Ryerson hosted dessert at Taylor House, and alumnae had an opportunity to intermingle with the college trustees, who were also on campus that weekend.  On Sunday morning, over breakfast, Alumnae Council participants had an opportunity to hear directly from President Ryerson and ask questions about college initiatives and goals.

In addition to participating in workshops and hearing from the president and her staff, alumnae had a chance to connect with students over dinner. Alumnae who returned to campus early on Friday took students out to local restaurants and all reported having had a wonderful time.

Another important role of Council is to acquaint alumnae with academic programs.  This year we offered a Book Arts Center Workshop.  Terrence Chouinard, director of the BAC and Sarah Roberts, Victor Hammer Fellow, led alumnae through an informative tour of the unique center as well as a printing demonstration.  Each alumna was able to make a keepsake.

Alumnae Council is a time for networking and knowledge-building, but it is also a time for fun. This year, we had an alumnae party at the Paul Jones House, located in the Village. The Paul Jones house was willed to the College for alumnae use by Pauline “Paul” Jones ‘18.  The quaint cottage provided a perfect venue for a get-together. Also for fun, the FARGO Board (Friends and Recent Graduates Organization) hosted a social at, where else but, the Fargo!  It was a great time for alumnae to meet recent graduates who enthusiastically serve on the FARGO Board.

Thank you to all alumnae who attended Council this year. They volunteer in various capacities: class chairs and agents, class secretaries, regional representatives, and FARGO and WCAA board members.  Many came from close to campus and still many came from as far as away as California, New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida!
