Alumnae College and Reunion 1999 |
Blessed with the loveliest weather imaginable, Alumnae College and Reunion 1999 took place on campus May 27-30. A record crowd of over 480 alumnae and guests enjoyed the festivities.
A highlight of the weekend was the presentation of the Alumnae Award to Carolyn Bunn Wood '52. Her acceptance address and photos of the ceremony are available on our Web site.
Faculty members explored this year’s Alumnae College topic, "The Power
of Women’s Stories", in talks on Thursday evening and Friday morning.
Dean Ellen W. Hall and Professors Catherine Burroughs, Anne Russ, and
Victoria Munoz were this year’s speakers. Professors Augusto Soledad
and Susan Forbes of the Arts and Performance Department joined recent
graduates Sonja Roberts and Disha Mookherjee in a performance
highlighting the power of the human spirit.
JoAnn Carlson ‘99 presented the results of her qualitative research project. A hands-on workshop in the Wells College Book Arts Center was a favorite of many alumnae. An intergenerational conversation involving alumnae of different ages also reinforced the power of women’s stories. Alumnae College faculty members recommended the following works for readers interested in learning more about this year’s topic:
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Divine Tales of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells
The Body Project by Joan Brumberg
Eleanor Roosevelt by Blanche Wiesen Cook
A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaide
Rue Labatt, Rue Ordener by Sarah Koffman
Revolt Against Chivalry: Jessie Daniel Ames and the Women’s Campaign by Jacquelyn Dowd Hall
Special projects connected with the Alumnae Association’s 125th anniversary included the unveiling of the celebration quilt as a work in progress, work on the Alumnae Anthology, a display of the work of the "Hearts, Hands and Minds" of Wells alumnae, a fireworks show, and an expanded performance of alumnae members of Whirligigs and Henry’s VIII. Alumnae who have not yet created a quilt square or anthology page are encouraged to do so.
Reunion 2000 is scheduled for June 1-4, 2000. All alumnae are warmly invited
to attend. Classes ending in a "5" or "0" will have special
celebrations.
