Alumnae College
and Reunion 2000

In this special year, the Wells community has much to celebrate. As Wells looks to the new millennium from a position of strength, we invited all alumnae to gather on campus to celebrate each other and our alma matter. Over 400 guests returned to Aurora for Alumnae College and Reunion 2000 to enjoy a wonderful weekend of celebrating success at Wells College.

Alumnae College 2000 -- The New Century: Looking to the Future

Arthur J. Bellinzoni The turn of the century, indeed the millennium, provided a rare opportunity to discuss the role of science, the arts, religion, and government in the coming years. Can a liberal arts education help us envision the changes that the new century will bring? President Lisa Marsh Ryerson and Dean Ellen Hall gave the opening address on Thursday evening. They presented a brief history of liberal arts education and discussed its relevance in today's society.

Professor of Religion Arthur Bellinzoni, who retired this June, gave this year's keynote address on Friday morning. Using the perspectives gleaned from 38 years of teaching the women of Wells College, Professor Bellinzoni's talk inspired us about the promising future for Wells College. The text of Professor Bellinzoni's keynote address, Wells College: One Man's Journey, and photos are available on our Web site.

Professors Candace Collmer, Carol Shilepsky, Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo, Beatrice Farnsworth, Jenny Yates, and Arthur Bellinzoni also participated in panel discussions during the weekend.

Reunion 2000 Events

Fireworks over Cayuga Lake The Saturday evening gala took place in a beautiful tent on the AA Field. A fine meal, music by the Destination (a fourteen-piece band), dancing, a champagne toast to Wells proposed by President Ryerson, and a fabulous fireworks show were enjoyed by all guests. Alumnae members of Whirligigs and Henry's VIII and the classes of 1935 and 1950 also performed during the evening.

Reunion 2000 featured a display highlighting the creative imaginations of Wells alumnae. Works of art, crafts, needlework, books, illustrations, and photography were exhibited during Reunion in the String Room Gallery. We thank the many alumnnae who took part in the Showcase.

The 125th Anniversary Quilt and the volume Wells Wisdom, the result of the Anthology Project, were unveiled during Reunion weekend. More on both of these projects is available on the 125th Anniversary page.
