Network Setup for Win95/98/Me
Most computers we have seen
can connect to a dorm wall jack right out of the box with no additional
configuration needed. All you should need to do is connect your computer's
Ethernet port to the wall jack and turn it on. However if you purchased
a system without an Ethernet card, then bought one to put in, you MAY need
to go through the additional steps below. Keep in mind, that there
are several editions of Windows based on the 95/98/Mc platform so the screen
shots might not exactly match ours - but they will be close.
FIRST, TRY GOING TO THE
BLUESOCKET TO LOGIN
If you open a browser, you
should be automatically taken to the login screen located at https://10.3.11.10.
You may see some popup certificate windows appear first. Just accept them.
Then, you should see a screen with a login on the upper left of the screen.
Use your email ID and password to sign in. It is possible that your
computer might become de-registered for various reasons. This is
always the first thing to check.
If you cannot register, do
the step below, then try logging in using the bluesocket again..
THEN, TRY RESETTING
YOUR COMPUTER ADDRESS
If your computer was working
on another LAN (or a cable modem), but doesn't work at Wells, you might
just need to get a fresh address specific to the Wells network. Any
time you change the location of your computer, this could be an issue.
Here's a simple way to get a fresh address:
From the "START"
button, click on "RUN" then type "winipcfg" (no quotes)..
A window should appear with some buttons on it.
Click the "release"
button, then click the "renew" button. Then reboot.
You might need to try this more than once. If, after 3 or 4 attempts,
this doesn't enable you to use a browser, then something else is wrong.
You will then need to re-configure your machine further using the steps
below.
Some systems
may have a modem AND an Ethernet card but the computer is simply trying
to use the wrong adapter to communicate. If you have this situation,
you may need to do the following to tell the browser which connection
(phone or Ethernet) to use.
First, click on START
then Control panel. Then click on the
Icon.
You will see one of two screens
below. (if you don't, click on the Connection tab).
Be sure the "Connect using
a local area network" bullet is checked. Then, click the "connect"
button to launch the "connection wizard". On some versions of win98, you
will see the screen as below instead. If you have the screen below,
click the "Setup" button instead to launch the wizard. If there are
any settings in the white area, ignore them.
When following the next Connect
or Setup wizard screens launched by the button, make your configuration
as close as you can to the setting images below. (different versions of
win98 may have slightly different screens).
Click the "NEXT" button.
Select LAN, then click "NEXT"
button...
Make sure all boxes are unchecked,
then press "NEXT" button.
There is no need to go to
the additional mail configuration screens since all services are available
through webmail.wells.edu and webboard.wells.edu.
So, for now, just select NO and click the "NEXT" button.
Click the "FINISH" button,
and you're done!
If you still can't use the
system, you may then need to try the following:
If the Ethernet card came with
instructions, follow them. If it didn't come with any, follow the
steps below.
First, physically install
the card. When windows98 starts up, it will recognize the new card
and may prompt you for a win98 or NIC CD. Just press CANCEL.
Then, go to the Start
Menu and open Control Panel. Locate and double click the
icon. After clicking on the icon, you should see a box like the one
below. To get a network connection, you need an ADAPTER, a CLIENT
and a PROTOCOL installed as a set.
An Ethernet card needs each of these.
-
Client for Microsoft Networks
-
Adapter
-
Protocol - Microsoft's version
of "TCP/IP"
Delete all the configuration
lines above by highlighting them and then using the remove button.
Then configure each piece as follows:
-
Client:
-
Use ADD button to add in a Client.
Select
Client for Microsoft Networks.
-
Adapter:
-
Use the ADD button and select
Adapter.
You should have a CD for the adapter in your computer. It should
either be in the disks that came with the computer or a new CD that is
included with a new network card. Click the "have disk" button on the driver
screen. The computer will then ask to read from the software CD for
that adapter.
-
Then click the ADD button
then, select protocol, then select Microsoft TCP/IP.
-
Protocol:
-
Highlight the TCP/IP
network component by clicking on it once.
-
Click on Properties.
A screen will then appear.
-
i. click on the IP
Address tab.
-
ii. Make sure the bullet
in front of Obtain IP Address Automatically is highlighted.
-
iii. Click on the DNS
Configuration tab
-
iv. Click on the Disable
DNS bullet
Now click OK.
You may need the Windows 98 CD to copy new files. Simply put in the CD
and allow the computer to copy the files that it needs. If you are asked
if you would like to use the older version of some file or the newer version,
always pick the newer version. Then the machine will then need to be rebooted.
Once the computer is restarted,
it will present you with a log on screen. You may enter any name
and password combination you wish, and your machine will then be connected
to the network.
Note: The name and password
in win98 is only used for saving the arrangement of icons on your desktop
and for LAN file sharing (not music file sharing).. So, for most 98 machines,
pressing cancel will have the same effect as "logging in" with a name and
password.
Note: If the machine still
can't browse the net, you may then need to repeat the instructions from
the top again to tell the computer that it should use an Ethernet adapter
rather than a modem.
Additional optional configuration:
Advanced users may want to
use their own email clients such as Netscape or Outlook Express to connect
directly to our servers rather than using the web based services. If so,
we have provided a link to the settings below.
