The Netscape program
Featured Link:  • NETWORK ADVISORY •
On campus, you cen get a free download of Netscape 4.76  Here's what it can do...
  • It can send out HTML email that everyone can read
  • It can run it's own spam filter (that's more aggressive than what Wells runs)
  • Your mailbox will be only limited to the size of your hard drive
  • It has a really cool webpage editor
The Netscape program is free and you can download it HERE

Below, are setup instructions for several topics

- General instructions - For all email users
- optional instructions for sending out really great HTML email
- optional instructions for setting up a better spam filter
- optional instructions for creating a mailing list
- optional instructions to compose HTML pages

General instructions
When you first install the Netscape program, then run it for the first time, it will ask for you to setup a "Profile" that contains your email address..  The screen below shows how to get to the email screen so you can send out mail. From any Netscape screen, select "Messenger" from the pull down menu.

You can then send a message from this screen, or inspect your email settings by looking at the "Preferences" screen.  As was said before, if you completed the "Profile" wizard when the program first started up, this information will be filled out for you.  If you need to change email settings (or any other settings), the "Preferences" screen can be reached from any Netscape screen.  Let's take a look at the sub screens....

Once "preferences" is selected, you will see a screen similar (but not the same as) below. Expand the tree on the left by clicking the little "+" marks.  Click on the "Identity" object and you will then see the screen below.  We have filled the screen with some sample information.

Now, click on the mail servers object - and you will get the screen below.  Once you fill in the areas circled, click on the "add" button (also circled)

After clicking the "Add" button, you should update the circled areas with the settings as they are below.

You now can now send and receive normal text only mail.  To configure more features, read on....

Instructions for sending out HTML email
Sending email loaded with nice fonts or graphics can be tricky.  For example, when you compose a snappy looking HTML message, and then send it using your favorite email program (let's call this program Outlook), things may look great to you.  However, if your recipient reads the message using a different email program than you use, she may get only plain text – or even junk!  So, if you want to make sure everyone gets a nice looking message, you need to use a program that can send both an email version and a text version of the message (for those clients who can't read HTML email).  Fortunately, Netscape can do this.  Just visit the "preferences" screen and make your settings match below.  Now, when you compose messages using composer, you can add non-standard fonts and colors when you create your message so everyone can see it properly!  Note, it is also possible to sent out graphics in email however the graphics must be hosted on a server.  For assistance or advice, contact Networking Services.

Instructions for setting up a spam filter

Creating Message Filters

You can create and maintain message filters so that Messenger automatically matches criteria you set, including filing messages in a folder when they arrive.

To create a filter that handles incoming messages:

-In the Messenger window, choose "Message Filters" from the Edit menu.
-In the Message Filters dialog box, click "New".

You will then see the Filter Rules dialog box, where you enter information necessary to define the filter.

To edit a filter:
Select the filter name and click Edit.
To delete a filter:
Select the filter name and click Delete.
To turn a filter on or off:
Click the dot to the right of the filter name

Creating a Mailing List
If you regularly send messages to a group of recipients, you can call Computer services and they will setup a list.  However, if you're using Netscape, you can also create your own!  Here's how!

To create a mailing list and add it to your address book:

1.In the Address Book window, click New List.

2.Enter the following information in the Mailing List dialog box:

List name: When you use this name as an address, everyone on the list
       receives your message.

List nickname: Alias for the list name.

Description: Appears after the list name in the address line of the
       composition window.

3.Drag entries from the Address Book window into the list, or type in addresses.

 4.Click OK.

To remove a member from the list:

Select the member's entry and click Remove.

composing HTML pages
Everyone asks "How do I get a web site?" or "How do I edit my site?"  Just stop by Network Services and we can set up an appointment to show you how to get a site, and how you can  use Netscape to edit it!

For those who want to edit webpages, we have made a guide and tools available that will make creating and editing pages easy.  Note: If you have a later version of Netscape, you still need to use Netscape version4.76 to maintain compatability with web templates.

Download What-you-really-need-to-know (readable in MS-Word97/2000)
Download Netscape4.76 (approved editor for Wells webpages)
Download lview370.exe (a simple image editor)
Download ws_ftple.exe (a simple ftp client - free for academic use)

Meanwhile, check out The Web Sites of Wells College to decide what section your pages need to be in!
Then contact Network Services at network@wells.edu
