To
the left are links to services that Wells Network Services provides for
the campus. Here is a quick list of answers to the top questions that are
asked when people come to our office.
Question:
How
do I connect my computer on campus to the Wells network?
Answer:
On campus, there are Ethernet jacks in all residence hall rooms - one for
each student. We also have jacks scattered around the campus, for example,
in the Library and the Sommer Center. If you need to set up a new computer
for the Wells network, or if your settings were lost for some other reason,
we have a guide to help you get connected.

Question:
Do
you provide dialup access for off-campus access?
Answer:
We do, on a limited basis only to faculty and staff. Since campus dialup
is slow, time limited and requires special configuration of a PC, many
people find it is more desirable to use a commercial provider instead.
If you are a faculty or staff member and wish to have your computer cofigured
for Wells dialup, give Network services a call to arrange a time to drop
off your PC. For other general phone questions, visit the WELLS
PHONE page.
Question:
How
do you recommend dealing with spyware?
Answer:
Spyware ("stealthware," "malware") is a problem since it can install itself
just by browsing to some web sites. We have some prevention suggestions
and removal tips for computers that have experienced performance degredation
due to visiting such sites.

Question:
What
kind of email do you provide?
Answer:
All current students, faculty and staff have Wells email accounts. Service
is available using Wells Webmail or
POP3
access. We run anti-virus software on the mail server that blocks many
email viruses, and we use blacklisting
to eliminate some spam. If you need a new account or you have problems
with your account, see the guide below.

Question:
Do
you provide web site space?
Answer:
We provide web sites for each area of the college on www.wells.edu
(this site) and also provide self maintained web space on aurora.wells.edu
for faculty, staff and official student organizations. At
this time, individual students can get webspace as part of course work
if requested by a faculty member..

Question:
What
is your policy on "Fixing" broken computers?
Answer:
All Wells computers and software in computer labs or issued to staff and
faculty are maintained by Wells Computer Services. Students are responsible
for maintenance of their own machines. Students must take their equipment
to outside professionals for service. We may offer configuration advice
to a student if solicited, but it is only at our discretion and at the
student's risk. Because a misconfigured computer may affect other users,
we reserve the right to deny machines access to our network.
Question:
How
does the firewall protection and traffic prioritization affect internet
access?
Answer:
These two systems give the whole campus some protection against
worms and denial of service attacks. However, we also require all
students to run an anti-virus program and keep up to date with security
patches. We also prioritize mission-critical traffic such as web and email
over non-critical traffic such as internet filesharing programs..
