How to get a user name and password
New freshwomen get their email account during Wells Orientation.  New faculty, staff, and transfer students receive a letter mailed to their on campus mailbox with a user name, password and a general guide to email.  If there are questions, please feel free to stop by Macmillan 109. Because of security concerns, we do not give out passwords over the phone or by email.

Email accounts are free of charge and remain active ONLY for the duration of a person's enrollment or employment at Wells. If you are going to be away from Wells for a semester or more, such as on a non-affiliated off-campus study program, please make arrangements with Network Services.

Mailbox quotas
Electronic mailboxes on our main mail server currently have a quota of 10 megabytes of disk space. This is enough space to hold several hundred typical messages. If the mailbox fills up, new incoming messages are discarded and the sender gets an error message. When you use Wells WebMail to access your mailbox, your mail is subject to HENRY's quota. If you use a POP3 client on your PC or Mac to read mail, you can avoid quota issues by moving mail to your own machine before your mailbox on the server fills up.

Anti-Virus / Anti-Spam measures
All Wells email is currently being scanned for viruses and worms. However no anti-virus measures can be 100% effective so caution is still advised when opening an email attachment. Due to censorship concerns, we only do minimal anti-spam measures consisting of rules that stop mal-formed email (such as email with no return path) and a "black hole" list that stops some of the major spammers. If you or someone you know has problems sending Wells College a message from off campus, click HERE for a guide to resolving this issue.

Below are some ways to use email at Wells

WELLS WEBMAIL

By far, this is the easiest system..  From any Internet-enabled computer in the world, just go to http://webmail.wells.edu and log-in with your Wells user name and password.  If your computer can browse web sites, you can use this system.

NOTE: AOL users may have trouble using Wells WebMail with the proprietary browser that comes with the AOL service.  However, if the AOL browser is minimized, but the telephone connection is maintained, and a standard browser is used instead, Wells WebMail will work fine.  Just click on the blue "e" icon located on most desktops to use Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser with AOL's service.

POP3 client program
Others may want to use their own email clients such as Netscape or Outlook Express to connect directly to our mail server.

see: Generic POP3 Settings

A special note to staff and faculty

Faculty and Staff machines are configured by Wells Computer Services.  Please feel free to call if there are questions about your specific computer station.
