Spam - how to deal with it
Featured Link:  • NETWORK ADVISORY •
Check your spam box!  Here's how...
Go to the site "http://bulkmail.wells.edu"

You will see this screen

If it's your first time, click the "Create new password" button.

Once you do that, use another window to check your regular mail.  Login with the password that was sent to you from "Barracuda". Don't forget to add the "@wells.edu" to your username.   If you are on campus, you can just use the express link in the email to login.

Whatever method you use to log in, you will see the screen for what mail was stopped. If messages you need are trapped in this area, simply checkbox individual messages, then use the "deliver" button to send mail to your regular inbox. In these screens, you can set "preferences" to train your account to stop spam more accurately in the future.  You can also set your password to something meaningful rather than the random one assigned.

Click Me!

You will see a screen such as this.  Use "whitelist" to let future emails through from specific addresses or use a blacklist to stop annoying mail that gets through.  If you don't visit this screen every few days, messages will automatically be deleted for you.  If all this is too complicated, you also can also just click on "preferences" then click "spam settings" to turn all spam filtering off.

FAQs
Question: Does Barracuda filtering stop college mail too?
Answer: No.  If you are sending from a Wells address to another Wells address, only virus filtering is done.  Spam filtering is only performed for mail from OFF campus addresses.

Question:  The express link doesn't log me in!  What do I do?
Answer:  For security reasons, the express link in the Barracuda messages will only work from ON CAMPUS locations only.  If you are off campus, you will need to log in by using the bulkmail.wells.edu screen.

Question: I have an alias.  Do I get Barracuda messages for that too?
Answer: For every alias you have, you have a separate barracuda login.  If you have an alias such as a department name, you need to set preferences for that alias too!

Question: Why do I get messages from a group I'm a member of?
Answer: You may get messages from groups too.  The default is to have anyone who is a member of the group be able to get barracuda messages for that group.  You may want to assign one person such as the group owner for "spam inspection duty".  Just go to "Preferences" the "quarantine" then fill in the "notification address" of who should have this duty.

Question: Is spam filtering really needed?
Answer:  Depends on what type of mail that you get.  Some people have complained of HUNDREDS of off campus messages that consist of pure spam.  For these people, training the box using white and blacklist entries may be a worthwhile exercise.  Others may just want to use periodic notifications (such as daily or weekly) while others may want to use no filtering at all!

Question: Can you "opt out" of all spam filtering?
Answer: YES!  Just log in, then click  on "preferences" then "spam settings" to turn all spam filtering off.

Question: I tried sending a message with an attachment and it got lost!  What happened?
Answer: Sometimes an attachment such as a word document, spreadsheet or database  may have content that happens to match a virus key.  If so, it will be automatically discarded.  If this is the case, re-save your message in some other format and try again.  Eg. If you have a word doc, try saving as .txt, rich text, HTML or even wordperfect format then resend.  If you have a database, try saving data using .CSV format.  You may lose formatting, but your essential data will go through.  So, when sending an attachment,  it's usually a good idea to send a followup message to verify that the sender received your message.
