Hostetter Lecture Room (209), Stratton Hall
The Wells College Book Arts Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Steven K. Galbraith for the 37th Susan Garretson Swartzburg ’60 Memorial Book Arts Lecture. Dr. Galbraith, curator of the Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection, will give a presentation titled "RIT's Cary Graphic Arts Collection: Highlights from Forty-five Years," discussing and describing the unique and fascinating works found in the collection. This event is free and open to the public.
The Cary Collection is one of the country's premier libraries on graphic communication history and practices. It originally consisted of 2,300 volumes gathered in the 1920s and 30s; the collection was donated to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1969 and currently holds 40,000 volumes in addition to a growing number of manuscripts and correspondence collections.
This lecture is the 37th in a series named for Susan Garretson Swartzburg. Working closely with Wells faculty and staff, Swartzburg helped to organize the press, bindery and other components that became Wells’ Book Arts Center. She served on the Book Arts Board and established a biannual book arts lecture series in memory of her father, developing contacts, raising funds, organizing events and finding speakers.
