Art Exhibit Room, Macmillan Hall
The Wells College Visiting Writers Series presents a reading by poet, nonfiction writer, journalist and editor Melissa Balmain. On Tuesday, October 1st, at 7:00 p.m., Balmain will read from her work in the Art Exhibit Room of Macmillan Hall on the Wells College campus. Balmain's visit to Wells, which will include nonfiction and poetry writing workshops, is made possible, in part, by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
Melissa Balmain recently became editor of Light, an online journal of comic poetry. Her articles and humor pieces have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Miami Herald, The Philadelphia Inquirer and many other magazines and newspapers. She is a columnist for Success magazine and the author of a memoir, “Just Us: Adventures of a Mother and Daughter” (Faber and Faber). Her poems have been published in such anthologies as The Iron Book of Humorous Verse and Killer Verse, as well as in American Arts Quarterly, The Formalist, Measure, Mezzo Cammin, The Spectator (UK) and elsewhere.
Balmain’s nonfiction has been honored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, the Society of Professional Journalists and the American Society of News Editors. She teaches writing at the University of Rochester.
There is a display of her work at the Wells Library. The Wells College Press will publish a poem of Balmain’s as a poetry broadside, which will be available at her reading.
