General Info

The Wells College Arts and Lecture Series presents a performance by the Koresh Dance Company at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in Phipps Auditorium of Macmillan Hall on the Wells College campus. Koresh Dance’s 2012-13 season celebrates the company’s 20 year anniversary with a variety of retrospective pieces choreographed by founder and artistic director Ronen Koresh. This event is free and all are welcome to attend.

Koresh Dance Company was founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director Ronen (Roni) Koresh. Known for its contemporary edge and technically superb dancers, the company’s critically-acclaimed work continues to attract increasing audiences. With bi-annual seasons in Philadelphia and performances around the country, Koresh has received much local and national recognition. The company has also been hailed internationally, touring to destinations including Spain, Turkey, Israel, South Korea, Mexico and Guatemala. Over the years, Roni has developed a vast repertoire of work that ranges from explosive and passionate, to intimate and restrained. The company also presents work by guest choreographers including Ohad Naharin, Robert Battle, Donald Byrd, Itzik Galili and Paul Selwyn Norton.

Opened in 1993, the Koresh School of Dance serves as the company’s home and remains dedicated to its goal of being a dance training center for the Philadelphia community. Located in the heart of Center City, the studio offers over 60 classes a week for both children and adults, in styles such as jazz, ballet, pointe, hip hop, modern and tap.

In 2008, the Koresh Youth Ensemble was established to give young dancers intensive training and greater performance opportunities. Students who demonstrate both the talent and desire to become professionals are selected to join the group. Under the direction of Melissa Rector, assistant artistic director of Koresh Dance Company, members have the opportunity to learn original choreography and company repertory.

In addition to performance and instruction, Koresh Dance Company is committed to community building and outreach. Koresh Kids Dance brings arts education to underserved children by creating partnerships with Philadelphia public schools, giving children invaluable tools for all aspects of their lives. The Koresh Artist Showcase features work by local choreographers, giving artists in the community the opportunity to connect with a wider audience.

The Wells College Arts and Lecture Series brings a range of artists and intellectuals to campus to perform, to speak on relevant issues, and to represent the disciplines of theatre, music and dance. A committee composed of Wells faculty, staff and students selects groups and individuals for each season.
