Reading of The Healing Muse
Visiting Writers Series welcomes contributors and editors from SUNY Upstate Medical University's literary journal.
Art Exhibit Room, Macmillan Hall
Wells College's Visiting Writers Series is proud to welcome back editors and contributors from The Healing Muse, the annual journal of literary and visual art published by SUNY Upstate Medical University's Center for Bioethics & Humanities. The reading will take place at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 14, in the Art Exhibit Room of Macmillan Hall. The 13th issue of The Healing Muse was published last month.
Readings will be of nonfiction, fiction and poetry, and readers will include editors of the journal and writers Bruce Bennett, Mary Gardner, Laura Glenn, Eric Machan Howd, Joyce Holmes McAllister, Katharyn Howd Machan, Kathleen Kramer, Tish Pearlman, Melissa Pheterson and Andrew Schep.
Deirdre Neilen, editor-in-chief, wrote in her Editor’s Note to the current issue:
"This issue of The Healing Muse contains the consolations afforded by memory and art. Once again our writers and artists have shared with us powerful images of lives navigating the country of illness and the world of loss. The journey is often fraught with peril and laden with uncertainty. It forces us to accept the unimaginable and to (in the words of founding editor's Bonnie St. Andrews’ poem) “join forces with/ allies I neither know nor trust.” As our issue attests, courage and imagination are steadfast companions and can help us both to remember what was and to shape what will be."
Poet, doctor, and professor at Harvard Rafael Campo wrote: “The Healing Muse, one of the first literary journals to recognize the connections between creative self-expression and healing, remains one of the foremost in the burgeoning field of the medical humanities…. It has grown to become an instrument of healing for our entire troubled culture.”
Refreshments will be served following the reading, and copies of The Healing Muse will be available. There is a display of issues of The Healing Muse in the Wells College Library.
