The Wells College Visual Arts Department welcomes New York artist Christopher McEvoy with the exhibition “Liminal States: paintings and mixed-media works by Christopher McEvoy.” This artist's work will be displayed in the String Room Gallery (SRG) from March 7 through April 5, 2012. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited to view the show. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, March 7 from 6 – 8 pm; refreshments will be served.
The exhibition will feature oil paintings on panels, all made by McEvoy, an assistant professor of studio arts at the State University of New York, Oswego. Gallery director William Ganis says, "McEvoy's paintings show a pictoral situation between the recognizable and unrecognizable—especially as his organic forms slip in and out of illusionistic space. At times we look at gorgeous handling of paint and colors, other moments we are drawn into a sinister space that has volumes and perspectival qualities, yet the indeterminate shapes evade our desire for resolution and legibility."
McEvoy received his BFA from Buffalo State College and his MFA from Boston University. He later spent a year as the Starr Scholar at the Royal Academy of Art in London. He has been awarded two full fellowships to the Vermont Studio Center and has shown his work in London, Boston and New York.
The String Room Gallery is a center for the exhibition of contemporary art in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is located on the Wells College campus in the southwest corner of the first floor of Main Building. Hours are Monday through Friday from 12 to 5 pm; and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.
