Wells College is celebrating
the connections between science and the liberal arts during the 2007-08
academic year. At a gala ceremony in September 2007, the Wells community
dedicated our new science building—Ann Wilder Stratton ’46 Hall. The 45,000
square foot education facility strengthens the teaching of science and
math at Wells by providing a learning environment that supports serious
inquiry into the sciences and a teaching environment that allows faculty
to develop a rigorous science curriculum. The new structure includes flexible
classroom and lab spaces that support courses developed for science majors
and non-majors alike, as well as faculty offices and a multi-functional,
92-seat lecture hall. The lecture hall and several other major spaces were
designed to accommodate needs across academic disciplines, such as introductory
course lectures, college symposia and public presentations and events.

events are planned to continue the year-long celebration:

Science Colloquium
Fridays at 12:30 pm
Stratton 209
This long-standing weekly
science
colloquium series features speakers in all areas of the sciences, including
Wells students and faculty, and researchers from other institutions. The
lectures take place every Friday when classes are in session. |

Beckman Lecture
Friday, February 29
Dr. Kenneth R. Miller, professor
of biology at Brown University and a renowned spokesperson on the importance
of teaching evolution in the public schools, gave the annual Beckman
Lecture on “God, Darwin, and Design: Thoughts About America’s Continuing
Problem with Evolution.” He also gave the weekly science colloquium talk
“Time to Abandon Darwin? Meeting the Challenge from Intelligent Design.”

7th Annual Activism Symposium
Friday, March 28
This year’s symposium “The
Anatomy of Change” captures the theme of “the body” and features a keynote
address and more than 20 workshops, break-out sessions, and demonstrations.

Psychology in Film Series
Varies; check Events
Calendar
The Psychology in Film series
explores how select movies depict a variety of diverse human conditions,
cognitions and behaviors. Each screening includes a brief introduction
and a culminating group discussion. Four films will be shown: Awakenings
(February 11), Spellbound (March 3), The Hours (March 31),
and
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (April 28).

Phi Beta Kappa Scholar
November 15 & 16,

Cornell University’s Professor
of Computing Daniel Huttenlocher was this year’s Phi
Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar. As part of his campus visit, Dr. Huttenlocher
gave a public lecture on “Computer Vision: From Autonomous Vehicles to
Video Surveillance to Image Search.”

Literary Reading
November 6, 2007
Several editors and writers
read from issue #7 of The Healing Muse, a journal published by SUNY Upstate
Medical Center’s Center for Bioethics & Humanities in Syracuse. The
volume features fiction, poetry, narratives, essays, memoirs and visual
art focusing on themes of medicine, illness, disability and healing.
