Institute 2009 Brochure (PDF)
The most beautiful thing
we can experience is the mysterious.
- Albert Einstein
Please come join us as we
unlock some of the mysteries of the black art of printing, the formation
of beautiful calligraphed letters, or the mechanics and variations of binding
techniques. In keeping with our high standard of quality, we have invited
ten of the best book
artists in the nation to
lead us through our fifth annual Summer Institute. We hope that you can
be a part of our foray into the book arts on the bucolic campus of Wells
College on the eastern shore of New York’s Cayuga Lake.
We have a terrific group
of teachers coming to Wells, including Michael Bixler, one of the nation’s
last “hot metal men,” who has agreed to offer a course in Monotype keyboarding
and typecasting at his shop in Skaneateles, twice: in Sessions One and
Two! And we are delighted that Rachel Wiecking and Monique Lallier, whose
classes had to be cancelled in 2008, are able to join us at last in 2009.
The first session of our 2009 Institute will run July 5-11. Rachel Wiecking,
Wells’ fifth Victor Hammer Fellow, will guide her students in the use of
wood type and ornaments to design and print broadsides. Hedi Kyle’s binding
class will look at the function of the book while learning structures suitable
for a variety of contents,
including small objects.
And Nancy Leavitt’s class will learn both traditional and new design &
layout techniques as they practice their calligraphic hands. Michael Bixler’s
class will have lessons at Monotype keyboards and casters, casting their
own texts or filling a case with type.
In Session Two, July 12-18,
Steve Miller’s students will explore the creative side of letterpress printing
as they learn about the Vandercook Proof Press. Carol Barton’s class will
discover the ins and outs of a variety of pop-up structures from one of
the nation’s pop-up superstars. The students in Nancy Culmone’s class will
learn from her expertise in innovative calligraphy as they explore and
design decorated letters.
Our third and final session,
July 19-25, will continue the mix of tradition and modern. Wesley Tanner’s
class will look at the livre d’artiste. Monique Lallier’s class in leather
binding will introduce beginners to the French style of binding with leather
and will hone skills for more advanced students. And calligrapher Julian
Waters will lead his students as they explore the space inside and between
letters.
No matter which course you
find the most intriguing or enthralling, or whether you come for only one
week or for all three, we know that you will learn more than you counted
on while developing new talents and skills, starting new friendships and
probably strengthening some old ones. If you have any questions, please
contact me at 315-364-3438 or at ngil@wells.edu. We look forward to seeing
you in 2009!
