Aurora, NY –Cody
Glassman headed a shot over the outstretched fingertips of
Morrisville State goalie Greg Igglesden with 8:05 remaining as
the Wells Express men’s soccer team defeated the Mustangs 2-1 on
Thursday afternoon at Wells. Blasdimil Gomez also tallied a goal
for the Express while goalie Mike Birklin finished with 11 saves
in victory. The Express improve to 5-10 on the season while the
loss drops the Mustangs to 3-7-1.
Despite both teams battling back and forth, the Mustangs
would score the first and only goal of the first half on a
penalty shot by Andrew Stein at 26:05.
The score would remain 1-0 well into the second half until
Gomez deflected a shot from Justin Rigney by Igglesden to tie
the game at one with 33-minutes remaining. With the Express
pressuring deep inside Mustang territory, Delroy Roberts sent a
beautiful cross just over the defense, finding Glassman who
headed the ball over the goalkeeper’s fingers for what would be
the eventual game winning goal and 2-1 lead with less than ten
minutes remaining. The Mustangs were unable to generate any
substantial scoring opportunities in the remaining minutes as
the Express sealed the victory.
The Express will next take on Daemon College on Monday,
October 19th at 4:00 pm at Wells.
