The swim team has been breaking record after record so far this year.  Coach George is optimistic that the best is yet to come for every member of the swim team.  Here are some highlights and personal achievements from the season.
 
 

The Express swim team completed the second day of competition late Friday evening at the NYSWCAA championships at Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY.  The women's swim team had even more succes on Friday as they did on opening day.  The following are the highlights from day two:

The first event of the day was the 400 IM where Kelsey Thomas' (11)  took 4 seconds off her lifetime best (5:30.56).

The second event was the 200 Freestyle where Colleen Keegan (10) took off 3 seconds (2:31.77) and Tiffany Raymond (10) took off 4 seconds (2:45.89) to achieve lifetime best times.

In the 100 Breaststroke Erica Rose Thomas (08) was seated at 31st but after she swam in the morning she earned the 24th spot, with a season's best time of 1:15.75, which enabled her to swim at finals. Erica is the first Express swimmer of the meet (and Coach George's first swimmer) to make it in the finals.

The last event of the evening was the 800 Free Relay where Colleen Keegan (10), Kelsey Stafford (10), Tiffany Raymond (10) and Beverly Bauman (10) earned the 4th spot on the All Wells Top Ten Times with a time of 10:41.62.

The Express will look to build off of their record breaking performances so far in the competition to finish off with a tremendous third and final day today!
 
 

The Wells women's swim team completed their first day of competition on Thursday evening at the NYSWCAA championships.  Coach George was very please with the performance of the Express swimmers on the first day.  Here are some of the highlights from day one:

The Express finished in the top 24 in the prelims which qualifies them for the finals in both of their relays - 200 Free Relay and 400 Medley Relay. The swimmers were Erica Rose Thomas (08), Kelsey Thomas (11), Samantha Hessling (11) and Jackie Ross (11).

The 1st event of the competition was the 500 free where Erica Rose Thomas (08) took 5 seconds off her season's best (5:55.40), Colleen Keegan (10) took off 3 seconds off her lifetime best (6:33.75) and Kelsey Stafford (10) took 11 seconds off her lifetime best (7:04.74).

The 2nd event of the competition was the 200 IM where Jackie Ross (11) took 4 seconds off her lifetime best time (2:37.17).

The 3rd event of the competition was the 50 free where Amber Hale (09), Beverly Bauman (10) and Tiffany Raymond (10) all took off a second.

We look forward to the Express having another succesful day today in day two of the three day meet.
 
 

Men's 200 Medley Relay team placed 2nd at the meet and for the first time in Wells history we have record for this event. The members of the relay team are Mike Scharvella (11), Matt Boyce (08), Court Carnahan (10), Chris VanWert (08) with a time of 4:45.21.

Chris VanWert (08) broke two of his own records. During the 1000 free he broke the 500 free record (6:02) and his 1000 free record (12:21.78)

Erica Rose Thomas placed 1st in both of her individula events, 100 Breaststroke
(1:17.65) and 200 breaststroke (2:44.79). During the 200 breaststroke, it was also the closest finish of the meet with Megan Beaulieu-Jones (Skidmore) coming in .25 behind Erica Rose Thomas.

Men's 400 Free Relay broke yet another record with a time of 4:10.21. The members of the relay team are Matt Boyce (08), Court Carnahan (10), Chris VanWert (8), and Mike Scharvella (11).
 
 

Mike Scharvella (11) - Broke his own Wells College record with a time of
1:07.29 for the 100 Backstroke.

Erica Rose Thomas (08) - placed 1st in the 200 Breaststroke (2:44.06)

Kelsey Stafford (10) - earned a life-time best time in the 500 free taking off
6 seconds from her old time (7:15.57). She is also one second off from her life-time best time in the 1000 free (15:11.02)

Kelsey Thomas (11) and Jackie Ross (11) placed 1st and 2nd in the 400 IM. 
Thomas took off 16 seconds and earned 7th place on the All Wells Women's Top Ten Times (5:34.54). This was Jackie's first time swimming this event and she place 8th on the All Wells Women's Top Ten Times (5:41.74).

200 Free Relay (2:09.75) - Samantha Hessling (11), Colleen Keegan (10), Tiffany Raymond (10), Kelsey Stafford (10).

Mike Scharvella (11) earned a life-time best time by just over 2 seconds in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 58.95. He also placed first in the event and is now in 3rd place on the All Wells Men Top Ten Times.

Chris Van Wert (08) earned the 1st place spot on the All Wells Men's Top Ten Times in the 1000 free with a time of 12:42.87.

Colleen Keegan (10) started off the meet with a very close 1st place win in the 1000 free, it was the closest finish of the meet. Colleen Keegan (WC) touched out Emily Eisenberger (CAZ) by less than a second. Keegan's time was a life-time best time (13:35.10).

Jackie Ross - Set her best personal time in the 100 Fly (1:08.97), placing 3rd at the meet and tied for 5th place on the "Wells Women's Top Ten Best Times".

Men's Team Broke the 400 Free Relay by over a minute! The members were Chris VanWert, Matt Boyce, Mike Scharvella  and McDonald Morris.

McDonald Morris - Broke the 50 free record by over 2 seconds with a time of 24.99.

Mike Scharvella and Matt Boyce also recordered times worthy of the "Wells Men's Top Ten Best Times". Mike in 2nd place (26.81) and Matt in 6th (30.43).
 
 

Women's 200 Medley Relay - 1st at the meet and they are now tied for 8th place on the Top Ten all Time Best times. (2:09.71)

Men's 200 Medley Relay - Broke the record by 21 seconds, with a time of 2:05.43.

Closest finish - Between Kelsey Thomas (Wells) and Anna Layton (Caz) in the 100 freestlye. Kelsey finished in 2nd place by .07 seconds.

Mike Scharvella (11) - Broke the 100 Backstroke record by 27 seconds, with a time of 1:11.40

McDonald (Mac) Morris (09) - Broke the 100 Freestyle record by 3 seconds, with a time of 55.69

Christopher VanWert (08) - Broke his own record in the 200 IM by 6 seconds, with a time of 2:38.41.

Patricia George is entering her first full year as head women’s and men’s swim coach at Wells College. George served as interim head coach of both Express teams this last season from late December to the close of the campaign. She also served as assistant coach of the Express this past fall and in the 2005-06 season. For the last three years, George has served as a swim instructor and lifeguard at the Cortland YMCA. She was also the head modified swim coach for the Dryden School District in the 2005 fall season. George swam collegiately at SUNY Cortland where she served as team captain her senior season and was part of the 800 yard freestyle relay team that set the school record. She still has a top-10 time in the 200 yard freestyle at Cortland and still competes for the Masters Swim Association. George earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and is in the process of completing a Master of Science in the same field from SUNY Cortland.

Description of Awards
MVS = Most Valuable Swimmer – Awarded by the team to the swimmer who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and has made an outstanding contribution to the team.

Rookie = Rookie Award – Awarded by the team to a first year swimmer who demonstrates the skill and personal characteristics that are reflected in the philosophy of intercollegiate athletics.

Express = Lesley Wead Zabriskie Express Award – Was established in 1990 and named in 1994, in honor of Lesley Wead Zabriskie, Director of Physical Education from 1938-1946. Awarded annually to a member of each intercollegiate team who embodies the true ideals of team commitment, leadership, discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship.

Honora Boyer Cameron Award - awarded annually to a student for her outstanding contribution to the Swimming Program.
