WHEELER EARNS NSCAA SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD

Aurora, NY- Wells College men’s soccer player Derek Wheeler has been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Scholar East All-Region team for his academic excellence in the classroom and his impressive athletic performance on the field.

ROBERTS AND BIRKLIN NAMED TO NEAC MEN'S SOCCER ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS

Aurora, NY- Sophomore Delroy Roberts was named NEAC Men’s Soccer Second Team All-Conference while senior Mike Birklin was named NEAC Men’s Soccer Third Team All-Conference released on Friday afternoon by the NEAC office. Both Roberts and Birklin helped lead the Express to a 7-13 season and the No. 6 seed in the NEAC tournament.

EXPRESS FALTER IN SECOND HALF; FALL TO SUNYIT

Aurora, NY- The SUNY IT Wildcats scored twice in the second half as the No. 2 seed Wildcats defeated the No. 7 seed Wells College Express 2-0 in the quarterfinal round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament on Thursday afternoon in Aurora. Handy Eugene (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and Dennis Owusu-Ansah (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman) each tallied goals for the Wildcats while Express goalie Mike Birklin (Cicero, NY/North-Cicero Syracuse) finished with 12 saves in the loss.

EXPRESS SEND MUSTANGS PACKING; ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS

Aurora, NY- Alioune Sene (Dakar, Senegal) scored on a penalty shot in double-overtime as the #7 seed Wells College (7-12) defeated the #10 seed Morrisville State (3-14-1) 1-0 in the first-round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Wells. Express goalie Mike Birklin (Cicero) finished with seven saves in the shutout victory while Mustang goalie Joe Bunzey (Afton) finished with six saves in the loss. The Express move on to face the #2 seed SUNY IT Wildcats (12-6) in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, November 5th at 11:30 a.m. at Wells.

MEN'S SOCCER EARNS #7 SEED IN NEAC TOURNAMENT; SET TO HOST WITH KEUKA COLLEGE

Aurora, NY- The North Eastern Athletic Conference released the men’s soccer conference tournament seeding Sunday morning with Penn St. Abington taking the overall top spot. The Wells men’s soccer team earned the #7 seed in the tournament and will host the #10 seed Morrisville State in the opening round on Tuesday, November 3rd at 2:00 pm at Wells. Wells enters the tournament with an overall record of 6-12 having defeated Morrisville back on October 15th,  2-1.

EXPRESS ROLL OVER PENN ST. BERKS ON SENIOR DAY

Aurora, NY- Delroy Roberts scored two goals and Alioune Sene added a goal and an assist as the Wells men’s soccer team rolled to a 4-0 shutout victory over Penn St. Berks on Senior Day at Wells. The Express finish the season at 6-12 while Penn St. Berks falls to 1-16.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER GAMES CANCELED

Aurora, NY- The women's soccer game against St. John Fisher at 3:00 pm and the men's soccer game scheduled for 3:30 pm against Utica College have been canceled due to poor field conditions as a result of the rain received over the last 24 hours. Both games will not be rescheduled.

CAZENOVIA HANDS EXPRESS 1-0 LOSS

Cazenovia, NY- The Cazenovia Wildcats men’s soccer team scored on a deflected shot late in the first-half for the only goal of the game as the Wildcats blanked the visiting Wells Express 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Cazenovia. The loss drops the Express to 5-12 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 8-6-1.

COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AS DAEMEN HANDS EXPRESS 2-1 LOSS

Aurora, NY- The Daemen Wildcats held off a furious rally by the Wells men’s soccer team as they held on to defeat the Express 2-1 Monday afternoon at Wells. Chad Hopson and Mike Wild each scored for the Wildcats while Cody Glassman scored the lone tally for the Express. With the loss the Express fall to 5-11 on the year while the Wildcats improve to 3-10.

GLASSMAN PROPELS EXPRESS OVER MUSTANGS

Aurora, NY- Cody Glassman headed a shot over the outstretched fingertips of Morrisville State goalie Greg Igglesden with 8:05 remaining as the Wells Express men’s soccer team defeated the Mustangs 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Wells. Blasdimil Gomez also tallied a goal for the Express while goalie Mike Birklin finished with 11 saves in victory. The Express improve to 5-10 on the season while the loss drops the Mustangs to 3-7-1.

Bradford, PA- The Pitt-Bradford Panthers scored with 40-seconds remaining, breaking a 1-1 tie, as the Wells men’s soccer team fell 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Bradford.  Justin Rigney scored the lone goal for the Express while Nick Accordino finished with seven saves in the loss. Wells falls to 4-10 on the season while Pitt-Bradford improves to 2-11.

CARDINALS ROLL OVER EXPRESS

Aurora, NY- The St. John Fisher Cardinals used a steady offensive attack as they went on to defeat the Wells College men’s soccer team 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Wells. Luke Lennox led the 33 shot attack for the Cardinals recording two goals on five shots. Mike Birklin paced the Express in net recording 13 saves, including nine second half saves, in the loss.

ALIOUNE SENE EARNS NEAC STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS

Gansevoort, NY- Alioune Sene (Dakar, Senegal) was selected as the NEAC Men’s Soccer Student-Athlete of the Week for his offensive performance leading the Wells College Express to a 2-0 week. Sene, a sophomore forward, scored 1 goal and 1 assist on 6 shots on goal, including the game winner in the double overtime win against Hilbert College. Sene’s assist came against conference rival SUNY Institute of Technology on Saturday.

 

MEN'S SOCCER HOLDS ON FOR 2-1 VICTORY OVER SUNY IT

Aurora, NY- Justin Rigney (New York) and John Iapoce(Boiceville) each scored in the first half as the Wells College men’s soccer team held on to defeat the SUNY IT Wildcats 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Wells. Nico Facey(New York) scored the only goal for the Wildcats while Kurt Makowski (Grand Island) finished with four saves in the loss. The Express have now won four of their last six games, improving to 4-7 with the victory, while the Wildcats fall to 7-4.

Hamburg, NY- Alioune Sene scored on a header from a Derek Wheeler (Ava) corner kick with 1:01 remaining in double-overtime as the Wells College men’s soccer team went on to defeat Hilbert College 2-1 Thursday afternoon in Hamburg, NY. Express goalie Mike Birklin finished with 12 saves in the victory.

Aurora, NY– The Wells College men’s soccer team used a suffocating defense and an early second half goal en-route to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Keuka College Storm on Wednesday afternoon at Wells.  Justin Rigney scored the lone goal for the Express while goalie Mike Birklin recorded his second shutout of the season with four saves. Storm goalie Mike Meskell finished with six saves. With the win the Express improve to 2-6 on the season while the Storm falls to 4-2-1.

SAXONS HOLD ON FOR 1-0 VICTORY OVER EXPRESS

Alfred, NY– The Alfred University men’s soccer team scored 4:19 into the second half, breaking a scoreless tie, as they held on to defeat the Wells College Express 1-0 on Monday night at Alfred. Express goalie Mike Birklin (Cicero) finished with four saves on the night while Cody Glassman paced the offense with three shots, two on goal, for Wells.

RIGNEY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

 

9/21/09
Gansevoort, NY-Justin Rigney (New York, NY) was selected as the NEAC Men’s Soccer Student-Athlete of the Week for his offensive performance in a 2-0 win against conference foe, Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday. Rigney, a sophomore forward, was involved in both goals, assisting on the first in the 74th minute of play to break the scoreless game. Rigney later tacked on an insurance goal with three minutes remaining to seal the victory for the Express.

EXPRESS SHUTOUT NITTANY LIONS 2-0

Harrisburg, PA –Blasdimil Gomez broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute and Justin Rigney added an insurance goal with less than three-minutes remaining as the Wells College men’s soccer team went on to defeat the Penn St. Harrisburg Nittany Lions 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Harrisburg, PA.  Goalie Mike Birklin finished with eight saves in the shutout victory.

EARLY GOALS SINK EXPRESS

9/12/09
Philadelphia Biblical scored three minutes into the beginning of each half and held on to defeat the Wells College Express men’s soccer team 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Mike Birklin finished with 12 saves for the Express who fell to 0-5 on the season. Andy Ecker led the Crimson Eagles in net with nine saves while Justin Hays and Phil Haas each scored for PBU who improved to 2-1-1 with the victory. PBU held a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corners.

 

The Express will look to bounce back on the road against Penn St. Harrisburg on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 pm in Harrisburg, PA.

 

MEN'S SOCCER POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY

9/11/09
Due to heavy rain showers over the Philadelphia area, the men's soccer game scheduled for this Saturday, September 12th at 2:00 pm at Philadelphia Biblical has been postponed until Sunday at 2:00pm.

 

MAVERICKS SCORE EARLY DEFEAT MEN'S SOCCER

9/9/09
Down 2-1 at the half, the Express watched as the Medaille College Mavericks rattled off six unanswered goals, going on to defeat the Wells Men’s Soccer team 8-1 Wednesday night in Buffalo.  Nick Accordino scored the lone goal for the Express while senior Mike Birklin (Cicero, NY) finished with 10 saves in net. With the loss the Express fall 0-4 on the season while the Mavericks improve to 3-0-1.

MEN'S SOCCER DROPS SEASON OPENER

9/1/09
The Wells College men’s soccer team had no answer for the Cortland St. Red Dragons as eight second half goals led to a 9-0 lopsided defeat for the Express in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Wells. Five different Red Dragons scored as they improved to 1-0 on the season while the Express fall to 0-1 on the season.

  EXPRESS SET TO START 2009 SEASON

Led by first year head coach Dan Kane, the Express, who finished 5-9-2 last season and lost in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, will boast plenty of experience as they return five seniors and four juniors. In total, 13 of the 15 players from 2008, all of which accounted for the Express’ 22 goals last season, will return for the 2009 campaign.

DAN KANE HIRED AS THE NEW HEAD MEN'S SOCCER COACH AND MIXED GOLF COACH

Wells College is pleased to announce that Dan Kane has been hired as the new Men’s Soccer and Mixed Golf Coach. Kane has spent the last two years as the assistant men’s soccer coach at Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. Kane has also previously worked with the Maryland Olympic Development Program and the Crystal Palace FC Academy as an assistant coach.
