Biological and Chemical Sciences Research Guide

Locating Journal Articles

Searching for Journal Titles in the Biological and Chemical Sciences

Search here for a specific journal or to see a list of science journals (print and electronic) held by the library. You may also browse journals by subject (choose Science, Technology and Agriculture).

Core Science Databases and Indexes

Annual Reviews
Full text of review articles in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences, as well as some social sciences (anthropology, sociology). AR gathers and summarizes, or reviews, current research. You may search across all disciplines or limit your search to a single area of inquiry. Coverage: varies, generally full text is available for the last ten years with some additional backfiles.
General Science Full Text
Full text of 75 scientific journals and magazines from the U.S. and Europe. Abstracts and index of 250 journals. Coverage: full text from 1995 to present, abstracts and index from 1984 to present.

Additional Resources: Life Sciences and Medicine

MEDLINE (EBSCOhost) and PubMed
Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals. Links to full text where available. Coverage: 1950s to present.
Health Reference Center Academic
Full text of scholarly journals in nursing and allied health literature plus topical review articles and multimedia. Coverage: 1980 to present.

Additional Resources: Earth and Environmental Sciences

Agricola
Index and abstracts to literature in agriculture, forestry, and animal science, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Coverage: 1970 to present.
GreenFILE
Index of scholarly and trade journals, reports, and popular publications on environmental issues. Links to full text where available. Coverage: varies, 1973 to present.

General and Multidisciplinary Databases

JSTOR | ProQuest Research Library | Academic Search Elite | ECO
These databases include the full text of articles in a broad array of scholarly journals and include some coverage of peer-reviewed journals in the sciences, along with more popular titles. Look for lists of journals or topics covered in the database descriptions. Be cautious in reviewing results from general databases: they may be useful in one area but not another. For example, JSTOR has adequate coverage of biological and environmental science but virtually no coverage of chemistry or physics. ProQuest is better at basic physics and biology but only useful for applied chemistry. Academic Search Elite and ECO both cover core journals in physical, chemical, and biological sciences.

Locating Books

To browse for material in the biological and chemical sciences, visit the 500s on the first floor. Policy-related material and works on environmental studies and natural resources are located on the third floor in the 300s.
Library Catalog
Find books, journal titles, and media in the Wells College Library.
WorldCat
Search for books, journal titles, dissertations, and media in other libraries, and request material via Interlibrary Loan.

Web Resources

INTUTE: Science, Engineering, and Technology Resources
Index with links to online resources in chemistry, mathematics, computing, astronomy, physics, earth science, engineering, and technology. Selected and evaluated by specialists.
INTUTE: Health and Life Sciences Resources
Index with links to online resources in medicine, agriculture, bioethics, and biological sciences. Selected and evaluated by specialists.
Office of Scientific and Technical Information
OSTI (a U.S. Department of Energy program) makes available R&D findings in the physical sciences from government research.
Scirus
A gateway site that indexes journal content and also scientists' homepages, courseware, pre-published material, and patents. Includes press releases, some media, and reports from foundations and research institutes.

Biological Sciences

Entrez: The Life Sciences Search Engine
A cross-database search engine that includes PubMed (MEDLINE), Human Genome, GenBank, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and other NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) databases. The site includes access to data sets, sequencing, and structural models in the biological sciences.

Chemistry

ChemIDplus
A resource from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) that provides access to structure and nomenclature information for the identification of chemical substances cited in NLM databases. The database contains over 380,000 chemical records.
PubChem
Information provided by the NCBI on the biological activities of small molecules. Search for compounds, substances, and structures.
